I strongly considered renting from the 10th Street Lofts around June 2006. I had read all about it online and in the newspaper, and was looking forward to living in a historic downtown property. I called the phone number for the office and spoke with "-----." She was very rude and arrogant with me. Her tone basically came across like she thought her property was way too good for most people. I made an appointment to come see the property, and since it is a secured building (both the old car plant and the old paint plant) I was to meet her at the corner of 10th and Cherry at 8:30 a.m. the next morning. I got there a few minutes early, and waited. ----- didn't show. After about 20 minutes, I figured there might be a misunderstanding so I called the office from my cell phone. No answer. I tried again every 5-10 minutes until I'd been waiting an hour. I also tried the callbox on the outside of the building. ----- was just plain not available. Finally, right as I was about to leave, I decided to give it one more try since I'd waited so long and didn't want the trip to be a waste (I truly wanted to live there). ----- answered the office phone this time, and acted like I was an idiot for not "just coming in." I explained that the building was locked and she acted like that shouldn't have stopped me. She "never" answers the phone in the morning. There was no apology.

She took me on a tour of a studio, and it was a total shoebox. Tiny, dark and dirty, with a view of a brick wall. I don't know the square footage, but it was definitely not an attractive apartment. ----- was on her cell phone the whole time we were in the apartment, talking about personal issues with some friend.

I told her the unit really wouldn't meet my needs, and asked if she had any others. She shrugged and acted indifferent to my question, so I left.

I've been told by many other people who have checked this property out that this is the manager's normal course of business conduct. She frankly doesn't care and apparently, residents who complain to the building's out-of-state owner are ignored. odusyNYCcZ7yL3Bj5JtG

Manager's Response

From: Manager Date: 02/16/2008
We are confused, and it seems unfair that this person chose to post these comments 16 months after touring the facility. She clearly cannot appreciate the changes that have occured since her visit in June 2006. However, this was completely unacceptable behavior from the manager. The manager, her staff and our management company, have all been terminated as of June 2007. We regret that this prospective tenant did not get the full tour of our facility. Our facility has 94 units ranging in size from 600 sf to 1500 sf. The facility offers over 25 different floor plans. The interior spaces (alcoves, exposed brick and columns, some mezzanines) and views vary greatly between our units. We believe we could have identified a unit that exceeded this prospective tenant's expectations and they would have enjoyed living at 10th Street Lofts. With the change in staff, we have been told we offer a personal experience not available in many apartment communities. Comments like this were a wake-up call and we believe we have effectively dealt with the problem.

I did live in this building, unfortunately, and many times heard from potential renters that they were not met by management when they had an appointment, so I would let them in and gave them directions to the management office.
