New Management awful

From: -Anonymous-

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2009

I lived in the building under the older owners (in 2006) and they were great. I would have recommended the building to anybody. The new owners took over in 2007, I believe, and things have slowly been going downhill.
They have continually raised their rent significantly over the past few years, which would be understandable, except other apartments in downtown have not been increasing their rents and they have not done anything to offer more amenties to the tenants.
The management staff is awful, they are generally rude or, at best, indifferent, unknowledgeable, and unhelpful regardless of your request or question. The building is constantly churning through managers. A new one seems to come in about every 6 months. In the three years I've lived in the building there have been at least 6 different managers and each time a new one comes in things seem to go into disarray for a period of time. They have lost my rent checks and lost my lease documents. They have office hours posted on their door, but they don't follow the hours (or any set hours that I can figure out) so you have to check back constantly if you need something. They don't return calls or emails so you have to continue to follow up with them if you actually want a response from them.
The building used to be well maintained under the old owner and that has also gone downhill since the new owners took over. Particuarly in the garage, there are actually potholes within the garage and they no longer seem to keep the floor of the garage cleared (which they used to) so there is a ridiculous amount of build up of sand and salt, etc. in the winter and then chunks of cement from the potholes. The garage doors are constantly breaking. In the last three months I can actually count 5 times that the doors were broken. It usually takes them at least 48 hours or more to get them fixed or at least locked back closed so people can't gain entry to garage.
Although they've redone some of the building floors and common areas in anticipation of selling the condos and having new homeowners the majority of the building is in need of some updating and general maintenance. Even if they didn't update it strictly for aesthetic appeal there are many things in my apartment that I have requested numerous times be fixed (the window blinds, a problem with the window locking, a problem with one of my cupboards not opening) that have never been fixed. Also little things that need to be kept up throughout the building, for instance for months the light bulb in the trash chute room was burnt out and there was a ceiling panel removed in the elevator with lights burnt out for several months as well. Just little things that are easy to fix, but they don't for some reason. I have finally just given up requesting things be fixed because it's not worth the aggravation to deal with the management and get no response.
Make sure you see the ACTUAL apartment that you will be leasing. They have redone a few units and they seem pretty nice (although very cheap quality), the one they actually rent can be extremely different and most likely will be very different. Even if they say this will be the floor plan, make sure to request to see the actual unit. The ones they showed me (and others I've talked to) are redone with new kitchen cabinets and flooring (a laminate wood and light wood cupboards). However the majority of apartments have carpeting, laminate type cupboards that are off-white with dark fake wood veneer on the trim, etc. They are ok, but what they often show is not representative of what you will likely actually rent.
It's very sad to see the property declining constantly, it's a great location and could really be a great place, but it needs staff that actually cares about the tenants and the property and some maintenance. After this lease term is up I will definitely be moving out of the building unless things significantly improve. g-hKOS7s4Nq5n3hEIpHd
