Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2009

I lived in the apartments from 2006 to 2009, so I don't know everything that happened before I moved in. I can clearly tell you how it is now (as of the end of 2009). I will say that everyone is right about the letters (there were a lot of them, but that was starting to change), the apartments do have multiple inspections for cleanliness (and they also seem to find other reasons to enter the apartment), they do not want people being loud or having a party (but they will rent to a younger age of residents who do party), parking is atrocious, and their actions clearly show they do not want to invest in the property (except for some new windows in a few residences).

I did actually get fed up with all of it. My apartment was near one of those round trash cans, and that was the worst. There was this horrible smell of dog feces. They only emptied the cans after several weeks of feces setting in them (sometimes it takes them more than a month), and the smell in the summer was horrible. That issue was actually a problem during my full 3 years at Sherhood (my spouse gave it that name), so I doubt it will change. I think the only time they empty the cans is when they know they have potential tenants who will be walking by that particular bin. There were times they would let some of the trashcans overflow. So sometimes you'd see bags of feces on the ground. This was all due to their lack of maintenance.

The apartment was an average size, and the cost was also average for the area. Electricity is the only bill you have to pay, and the cost is anywhere from $40 to $100 a month (I did have seal leaks in my windows). There is a community laundry room, and the other tenants (in all buildings after talking with neighbors) have no problem moving your stuff out of the washer or dryer. There is no real rule, and the manager thinks moving laundry is not a big deal at all.

The first two years that I lived at Sherhood I can actually say I always recommended it to friends and co-workers. Now I base my decision to recommend it based on the person I am talking to. There is a clientele who really would enjoy living at Sherhood. I know it's not a person who wants to be proud about where they live. I do recommend Sherhood to those who just need to live in an apartment that takes big dogs. The people I recommend it to can not have high standards, because they would just wonder why I would lead them astray (and waste their time). I like that my recommendations are taken seriously and if I told someone with even moderate standards to rent there they would never trust my opinion again.

I do want you to know why I Sherhood as a recommendation. I am going to put down that I recommend the place, but I want you to do your own research first. If you just go based on the statistics, and are to lazy to read the reviews, then you deserve what you get. Choosing an apartment based solely on the ratings posted on an arbitrary website is just foolish in my book. You never know who you can trust. You can't tell someone's intentions. You don't know what there individual situation was. Instead you must do your own research. The reviews can only do a couple of things, they can give you a point of reference, and they can give you some pointers when you go looking at a new place to live. My pointers are below.

If you go in and the appliances are old you may not want that unit.

If you go in the unit and the windows haven't been replaced, you really don't want that unit (cooling cost in the summer is much greater, and it's hard to keep a consistent temperature in all of the rooms).

If you have more than 1 car, and you are opposed to walking you do not want to rent the unit.

If you have an aversion to people touching your laundry, and they still have the same policy, you don't want to rent the place.

If you don't mind a lot of ants, bugs, and spiders, then the place is for you (it's old and there are lots of holes for them to get in)

If you just want a typical, average priced, two bedroom, no frills apartment then you got it in Sherhood. It's not special. It is not great. It is an apartment, and can be a place holder until you can get something better.

One final note, I was very surprised to get a great deal of my deposit back after I moved out, so I can say that we ended our long relationship on a pleasant note.
