I am the mother of a college bound student, who will start school at the community college in Jan. On Monday of this week, I spoke with the manager via phone about needing an apartment in January. She told us that if we gave her the deposit, she would hold one for us, and not charge us rent until January, even though, it was only August. She told us that rent for a "Large 1 bedroom" was $455 per month, plus $30 per month for my daughter's cat. We drove three hours one way to check it out for ourselves. My daughter and I toured 3 of the "Large 1 bedroom" apartments today, (and they were small) liking that they were across from the community college. The girl giving the tour was ignorant to all our questions, and could not answer one of them. When she did "attempt" to, she'd change her story repeatedly. For example: I asked if the apartments got exterminated on a schedule since I saw dead bugs in all three apartments: she gave three answers in a 1/2 hour time frame: answer #1) no, only if someone calls in a problem. answer #2) Yes, once a month answer #3 yes, once every quarter. All of this girls replies to our questions were either, "ummm, I dunno", or just things she pulled out of the top of her head.
All 3 apartments not only smelled, but were digustingly filthy. We asked when they were going to clean them, and her reply was that they WERE cleaned and inspected already. Here are some of the things we saw: bugs in ALL apartments, especially crickets & spiders. Water stains in the ceilings where water had leaked into the apartments, the window seals rusted and peeled away, the carpets very filthy, as were the walls. Every wall in each apartment looked as if dark soda or urine was poured onto them, and allowed to drip down to the floor. The front doors were all filthy and dented in, and a couple looked as if they had been kicked in, and never repaired. There was a HUGE hole in a closet wall, and the "repair" was a screen with duct taped on the edges of the screen. No lighting in any of the bathrooms except for the "over the sink" small florescent bulb, which wouldn't light a thing. EVERYTHING in each apartment, whether it be a handle, a wall, an appliance.. EVERYTHING was sticky to the touch. Each of the apartments had the old brick red colored vinyl in the kitchens, which curled up at all it's edges, and there was nothing installed to hold them down. The paint jobs in all three apartments consisted of using a roller over a small area on a wall to cover a dark spot, and if it had been done near the bottom of the wall, the quarter round had paint all over it as well as the outlets. The stove in each were all very tiny, to tiny for anything major. All three toilets were brown inside from never being cleaned. I am not exagerating with any of this.. I could keep going, but I'd really rather forget the entire thing. Do NOT let your children live here!
Here was the real kicker, even if we would've been desperate to live somewhere, we still wouldn't choose this place! We found the conditions more disgusting than anywhere we've ever seen, along with seeing broken down vehicles in the lots, vehicles with nobody around w/ their hoods up, etc. When finishing touring, we went to talk with the manager. She denied ever telling me the she would hold an apartment for us, even though I had all my notes in my hand from the conversation. She even called me a liar. She then had the nerve to tell me that if I'd like to give her $50.00, she would put me on a waiting list for an apartment. (We toured 3 empty ones.. waiting list') I asked her if we did this, if she'd give me the same b.s. she gave me this time.
Bottom line: You couldn't pay ME to live here, much less put my children, much less a pet of mine in this place.

All of Hawkeye Village apartments have been fully painted or if they were painted in the last year they would have been touch painted before any new tenant would be allowed to move in. All carpets are steam cleaned and sanitized before a new tenant occupies the space. Your claims on this website are completely unfounded because I am the manager and I never spoke with you nor did I show you an apartment. I have a full time leasing staff. Please feel free to contact me at any time regarding your complaint. My comments on this website are real I am not posting this ANONYMOUSLY. My name is Angie if I can be of any assistance.
