Privately owned buildings make for shoddy quality.

My husband and I moved into Country Glen apartments in June of 1999. The landlord was very accommodating in helping us move in and was very understanding in letting us have a short-term lease towards the end of our stay as we were building a home.

However, the apartment itself left much to be desired. When my husband viewed the apartment the countertops while ugly where in okay condition. Prior to our moving in, the landlord slapped a coat of white latex paint over the entire apartment, including on the bottom of the bathtub and the kitchen counter tops.

Half of our outlets didn?t work. Our air-conditioning didn?t work properly. Our bedroom air-conditioner was replaced, but the living room unit had a bad habit of freezing and not working properly.

The kitchen cabinets and drawers were falling apart. They, of course, were painted white as well. The shelves were bowed and one door?s inner hardware had completely come apart.

It also appeared that someone had stuck glow in the dark stars to the ceiling and the landlord opted to paint over them instead of removing them.

Our biggest gripe, though, was the kitchen. Latex paint is NOT made to hold up to food preparation. It stained horribley and any scrubbing at all would remove the paint and show off the harvest gold counters (which would have been preferable to the paint, believe me).

Upon our moveout, our landlord charged us for damage to the bottom of the bathtub (um?.it was painted over when we moved it) and damage to the counters and cabinets. His list was long and fabricated and it was obvious that he no intent on parting with our security deposit. That was fine, we just wanted to be done with him.

We also enjoyed an annual rent hike.

One comment on crime, we had NO problems with crime at all. It was very obvious, though, that we lived on the ?nice? side of the development. Our friends who loved on the ?not nice side? had much more complaints than us about the quality of our neighbors, but noted no crime problems either. In our two years of living there I never heard of murders or gun shots. I do concur that there was a police presence, but I don?t really see that as a bad thing.

Traffic noise isn?t that bad considering the apartments are on two major roads and the ground, while boring, are decently maintained.
