I dare you to find Larger Units with more Outside Space and Amenities for twice the price. I looked for several years in the NW suburban area, and couldn't find anything comparable. I lived in a 2/2 for 10 years before moving into a 3/2 unit. These are well built, brick buildings with concrete floors and ceilings. And Yes, there are problems to be addressed, the buildings are nearing 50 years old, which means there has, is and will be some significant building mainteance. The halls are indeed ugly and in need of upgrading - but I don't live in the lobby or the hallway - my unit is lovely and that's where I spend all my time.
