A real nightmare
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 5/29/2007
Years at this apartment: 1998 - 2000
I lived here for 2 years. During that time, I got divorced and was left with 2 small children with no child support. I talked with the property manager who suggested I apply for Section 8 and assured me that they accepted it. I applied and was approved within 30 days but during this time, that manager left and a new one came in and she told me that they didn't accept Section 8. I tried to find another place but couldn't and eventually just ended up working multiple jobs to keep the apartment I was in because I couldn't find anywhere else to move to. A month after my Section 8 vouchers expired, the same manager rented a unit two doors down from me to a woman on Section 8. I managed to eventually get on my feet and was paying my rent in a timely manner though repairs were never made. I complained that the windows were leaking every time it rained so they came and permanently sealed them closed...no fresh air for us at all anymore. The shower came away from the wall to reveal a ton of mold, they just reattached it ... it came off the next month and the month after and the month after...they never did anything about the mold and continued reattaching the shower to the wall in the same manner each time even though it never stayed. The final straw was when they started serving me eviction notices claiming I hadn't paid my rent. I would get the notice, go to the office and show my receipt, they would apologize for their mistake and we would repeat the process the next month. Needless to say, when my lease expired, I chose not to renew. I notified them 30 days before the expiration of my lease that I wouldn't be renewing and would instead be moving. The month after I moved out, they filed eviction papers claiming I hadn't paid the last two months rent...only the papers were served at my old apartment (I have no clue who got those papers but it wasn't me) and since I didn't know about the court date of course I wasn't there and they received a default judgement against me. When I found out about this 2 years later when having my credit report run for something else, I contacted them and they claimed they had cleared it up but future checks on my credit report have revealed that they have not and it is still on there to date. It is due to be removed finally this year but after being promised that the mistake would be rectified during 10 different conversations, I eventually just gave up on this slumlord and started explaining the situation to people who needed to pull my credit report. I am so glad that the nightmare will finally be coming to an end.
