Security Deposit Ripoffs

My stay at Sandridge Apartments was pleasant. UNFORTUNATELY, I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS APARTMENT COMPLEX TO ANYONE ELSE. I had nothing but positive things to say about Sandridge until it came to the return of my security deposit.

$200 was deducted from my security deposit for cleaning expenses due to a strong odor coming from the carpet. When I called to inquire about the deduction, the leasing manager informed me that I had a cat that soiled the carpet. Anyone who knows me, knows that I have severe allergies; cat and dog dander being a couple. All of this is documented by my Allergist. The woman who rented the apartment before me had a cat. That is why they put in new carpet prior to my move in. I was shocked and angry that this happened. The leasing manager told me she never saw a cat in my apartment.

From late 2004 until late 2005 I made every attempt to get my money back to no avail. I had my attorney send them letters. I also provide them with documentation from my Allergist. The management of the complex sent a letter to my attorney claiming that members from maintenance saw a cat in my apartment during service calls. I was never informed by any representative from Sandridge that I had a cat in my apartment. They had a $250 pet deposit, so I am pretty sure they would have tried to get their money. In late 2005, I filed a small claims suit. In early 2006 we went to court. The case was continued a couple of times. I eventually won my $200 back. In the end, it was the principle, not the money.

I took pictures before and after I moved in. I made the mistake of giving the leasing office my keys prior to conducting a final walk through. I thought I was leaving on a positive note. I paid my rent on time and I was approved for a two bedroom apartment four months before I decided to move. Lesson learned: never turn in your keys until a final walk through is done in your presence no matter how great your experience may have been.

Several of my friends and relatives have asked me about my stay at Sandridge. Because of this, unfortunately I cannot recommend them. They blew what I thought was a positive relationship. In the end, an unsatisfied customer has the power to sway potential business away from a company.

I do not know what type of scam they are trying to pull. If this has happened to anyone else, please post your experience.

If Sandridge Apartments reads this, they will know who I am. The events described here are accurate and true.
