Complaint Description:
On or about 10/11/2006, I completed and returned an application for an apartment at 4423 N Sheridan Rd., Apt 1002, Chicago, IL. 60640. Along with the application, I mailed Wilmette Real Estate two money orders. One for an application fee of 40.00 (money order receipt no. 55594751641) and the other for a 350.00 rental deposit (money order no. 55595751630. I was told the apartment would be ready on 11/1/2006.
So, on 11/1/2006, I flew from Phoenix, AZ to Chicago to discover that the apartment was NOT ready. The woman in the leasing office, Senella, 847 373 2957, told me that the apartment would not be ready for a couple of days! She tried to convince me to stay in another apartment until mine was ready. The substitute apartment was filthy, smelled of urine, and the lock on the door was loose. So, I asked for my money back and flew back to Phoenix.
On 11/2/2006, I called Wilmette and spoke with Sean Wong, 847 920 2066, and Ms. Halim, 847 920 2067. I asked them to return my money. Wilmette agreed to do so. In fact, I still have the message Mr. Wong left on my cell phone, agreeing to return my deposit. I was told that my deposit would arrive no later than Wednesday, 11/8/2006.
On 11/9/2206, I called Mr. Wong back because I had not received my refund. He stated that my check was sent via certified mail on 11/3/06. I asked Mr. Wong to verify my mailing address. When he did not mention my apt number, I asked if the mailing included my apartment number. Mr. Wong stated that he did not think the check had my apt number on it. I asked him to reissue the check. Mr. Wong told me that he mailed the payment and that it was my problem if I never actually receive the check. Then Mr. Wong told me not to call back and hung up on me!
So, I called Wilmette back and spoke with Jennifer in accounts payable, 847 920 2072. Jennifer had no knowledge of my refund. In fact, Jennifer seemed to have no record of ever receiving my deposit or application fee. I gave Jennifer the receipt numbers for the money orders and she promised to call me back. I also left 2 messages for Ms. Halim (847 920 2067), Sean Wong's manager and she has not returned any of my calls.

I lived there and I had no problems. It was a really nice area close to transportation, diverse, clean, near the lake. The people were a little snobbish but other than that I enjoyed and had no problems with the renters.

We lived in another of Wilmette Real Estate's properties not too far away from that one. Sean was a very obnoxious person to deal with. He did the same hang up thing with me also.

I lived there three years ago and after three years, they now say I owe them $1,900.00, of course now I have to go to my old bank account and do a search. They are claiming I did not pay them last three months, which I did pay them. They have turned this ovedr to a collection agency and now they threatening to sue or turn it on my credit. Questions that I have, why did they wait three years to collect, why didn't they send any type of letter of notice of eviction. These people are crooks and now I am spending an enormous time with this situation I am now in. Do yourself a favor and pass on all properties Managed or Owned by Wilmette Real Estate company, I am now going to file with Illinois Attorney Generals office, as if they send out 1,000 letters like this to others, one poor soul will pay and this is unfortunate.
