The Carling Hotel isn't the greatest place to stay in Chicago, but it's tolerable
for a short-term stay, at least for some. Biggest issue to date that I'm aware of is some of the tenants who stay there, most of whom are obviously low-income. But they try to be careful about keeping problematic types out of there. 6TrHFn6pn7poyqNlKEgn

Carling Hotel rents to screw-ups and people with criminal records. The people who live there abide by a code of silence, so if there's something going on that a normal, law-abiding person would want to know about, sometimes even the manager doesn't even know. That is why they had a fire there back in April of 2009. Had that code of silence not been there, someone would have called down to the manager's office, or to the police, to let them know that a tenant was flipping out. They're very lucky that everyone got out in time and no one was killed. The manager, Veronica, is anti-social and belligerent, and probably has a drinking problem. The place should be shut-down. Do not go there if you can help it.

The Carling hotel was an oasis for me when I was laid off my job, and, for no fault of my own found myself in a homeless situation. I lived on the gold coast for 10 years, in a beautiful apartment, but could not afford it during economic times. The Carling was down the street, in a safe neighborhood I could afford on a part time job I was able to finally find. I have lived in high rises, and downtown most of my adult life. When I came there I saw many broken people hurt by life, but I saw in those faces acceptance and non judgment. They looked a little surprised someone like me wanted to stay there and they asked why? I told them I loved the neighborhood and I liked the people at the hotel. Veronica was loving and kind, hard and tough. She had been hardened by life, and needed to be that way to control some tenants who may have otherwise caused trouble. I saw college students who stayed there, I saw secretaries, working class people, who had come upon hard times such as myself, staying there to save money to get back on their feet. Occasionally (very rarely) an argument would break out, but it would be quickly handled by the staff. In my apartment building downtown I lived in, when a party goer would come home, argue and fight, the police would be called, but it was viewed at as a lovers spat. What was the difference? One group had money, and the other had none. I currently live on the 24th floor of one of the premier apartments downtown Chicago, across the street from Navy Pier and Millennium Park. And I love it here, but if I ever found myself in a situation in which I needed to get back on my feet, I wouldn't hesitate to go back to the Carling Hotel. The location is excellent, and for the price it's in a great area, it cannot be beat. It's so easy to judge those who have nothing, but don't judge until you have walked in another persons shoes. Do you know how it feels to not know where you will sleep tonight, and you have no one in the world? If you do not, you are blessed. There are many sleeping on the streets tonight. When you look at a homeless person, don't be so quick to judge, when you look at people living in sub standard conditions, don't be so quick to judge. It's by God's grace it could have been you. This is a very long review, but I hope it reaches someone.
