Not the greatest place to live... but Ok for temporary stays.

The Carling Hotel isn't the greatest place to stay in Chicago, but it's tolerable
for a short-term stay, at least for some. Biggest issue to date that I'm aware of is some of the tenants who stay there, most of whom are obviously low-income. But they try to be careful about keeping problematic types out of there.

Carling Hotel rents to screw-ups and people with criminal records. The people who live there abide by a code of silence, so if there's something going on that a normal, law-abiding person would want to know about, sometimes even the manager doesn't even know. That is why they had a fire there back in April of 2009. Had that code of silence not been there, someone would have called down to the manager's office, or to the police, to let them know that a tenant was flipping out. They're very lucky that everyone got out in time and no one was killed. The manager, Veronica, is anti-social and belligerent, and probably has a drinking problem. The place should be shut-down. Do not go there if you can help it.
