dearborn plaza could very well be a great place for some to call home, but it is not. at least not currently.
during my one year stay there, the block directly across from the building was occupied by a high-rise construction, a brownstone renovation, AND a massive demolition site.
again, that was a construction/renovation/demolition directly across the street from my apartment. the noise was UNBEARABLE! from monday to saturday (and occasionally on sunday), often starting as early as 5:30a (and never later than 8:00a), the sound of jackhammers, cranes, concrete shattering, steal beams scratching along the pavement, etc. filled my studio. the earplugs (highest nrr available, 34, ordered specially online) that I wore religiously to bed each night only mildly softened the noise, which would actually send sound vibrations pulsating through my mattress on especially hellish mornings. shortly into my lease, and more specifically, into this awful experience, my anxiety over the noise that was bound to rise with the sun each day began keeping me up all night. and needless to say, sleeping during the day was NOT an option. I couldn't stand the thought of going home each day after work, or spending a minute of my weekend suffering through the deafening racket!
honestly, you'd have to experience it to believe it, but I highly recommend that you just take my word when I say, "it was a nightmare!"
now, the office manager, ---, is your stereotypical sleazy landlord type. her personality is markedly rude, although, I must say that the least intelligent amongst us often don't know any better. that's probably still not an excuse for her behavior, though' she won't hesitate to repeatedly deliver bills to your doorstop that include bogus fees or exaggerated charges -even after you take the time to walk down to her smoke-filled office (i.e., your lobby) and sloooooowly walk her through the erroneous bill. she may correct the problem when it is pointed out, but that definitely doesn't mean she won't try to sneak it in the next month. but my favorite "--- moment'" definitely the day I viewed the apartment and inquired about the once-empty lot and other buildings directly across the street from me. "so, across the street... what's going on there'" she definitely looked me right in the eye and gave me some song and dance about how the one project site had run out of funding and would remain empty (I viewed the apartment on a sunday) and that there were no other plans for construction in the vicinity. hah. funny, right'!
mind you, without the construction and ---, this building would be an alright place to stay short-term if you're able to reside in VERY small quarters and sans a car (street parking is all they have to offer, and best of luck finding it). once the construction has ceased, halapts (the management company) would be wise to re-evaluate their choice for the building manager... and if she were replaced by a stand-up (or at least decent) and competent individual I would likely recommend the apartment.

well it is very different this year, 2007. The new ---------------------------------------- are VERY nice and accomodate all my needs. It was also easy to move furniture in through the back into the freight elevators, it is nice and quiet and I can get my work done here.
