Not going to rent here

I saw an add in "Apartments For Rent" (the free magazine) in the August 8 - August 21, 2008 issue that made this place sound like it was a cool, nice place in the South Loop.

But after reading reviews here and seeing almost unanimously BAD reviews, I am not going to rent here. It sounds like there's roach problems, thug problems, lazy maintenance people, and no A/C (which is a deal breaker in itself for me). The reviews are recent, too, so I know they're not left over from a previous bad management (which happens sometimes).

Thanks to everyone who wrote a review for this apartment.

Dude, good choice. Save yourself the agony. The ads sound really cool--"Party like a rockstar and live like an accountant"--but this place is crap. The management knows that too and they have plans to tear it all down and start building expensive condos. But they are trying to keep the place afloat for the next couple of years by appealing to college students and recents grads.

You can find a much larger place that has air conditioning, a dishwasher, an in-unit washer dryer, hardwood floors, oak cabinents, ventilation in the bathroom and kitchen, and modern double glazed windows (everything lake meadows doesn't) for the same price as lake meadows if you look around. You'll have to look beyond the large apartment guides though, because they typically only list the large apartment complexes. Lots of good deals in bridgeport and pilsen and tons of places on the north side. Also, there's a whole new area of new-construction apartments (condos too) between lake meadows and hyde park along the south lakefront at the same price point (google oakwood shores).

I bet they didn't put this in the apartments for rent magazine: http://tiny.cc/fM017 (This is a short link to a page with the full link to an investigative report the Chicago Reporter did on Lake Meadows. You'll need to copy and paste it, and then a page will come up that gives you a full link to the article.)
