Just another dark, antiquated 1970s building

You know it's time for a building to renovate when you see glazed brick and potted ficus trees in the lobby. Eww...
Checked out the price list & availability on some 1-bedrooms. Seems the good times for building owners is back since the prices were high for what you get. Few amenities, if any, are included in the base rent. Leasing agent said, "oh, but we have a doorman!" Yeah, honey. So do all the other condo and apartment buildings in the downtown & near north areas.
Just to get into the building, there's a $400 F-You fee that you don't get back, another $50 fee for an astonishingly high credit app, plus all renters have to pay for cable whether they want it or not. All the fun stuff that's hyped on the website & signage is additional--pool, gym, tennis courts, etc.--another $125 a month. I don't think so!
A renovated apartment means a few new appliances instead of the factory closeout appliance specials they seem to have in the rest of the units. Oh, great news--as an extra bonus, the leasing agent said she'd throw in a fresh coat of white paint if I signed a lease that afternoon. Goodness, where do I sign!
For the Northwestern Med & Law students, this place will seem like heaven...for everyone else used to something a rung above the bottom, go to the next ad in the apartment advertisements.
