Great for the first 2 years, bad for the last 2 years

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2008
I've lived at McClurg Court for the last 4 years and moved out in June. Like other reviewers I did my residency at Northwestern and work in hospital. The first 2 years I was there was when Charles Smith managed the building the rent was fair, I never had problems with the billing department and they took the money for the gas charge out of the direct deposit. Yes, there is the added expense of gas in McClurg that is about 80-95 dollars a month for a 2 bedroom unit.
From the time that RMK started managing the site my rent jumped from about a 7% increase a year to 18% year. I understand that new management wants to make a return on investment but to almost triple the yearly increase was a bit much. This was the first of many problems.
We constantly received incorrect billing and were always told it was our fault for not figuring out the gas bill correctly. They would not take the gas out of the automatic withdrawal that took them a year and a half to set up in the first place. When any question of billing was raised they were very hard to deal with as we were told that accounting was done not at McClurg but by RMK. We were doubled billed for the last month and money was taken out of the automatic withdrawal after we moved out. Again, we were told it was our fault for not canceling the automatic withdrawal with them even though we gave them 65 days notice. The day of move out I went down and asked specifically if they needed anything else from us including if we owed them any money. The very rude response I was given was," If you owe us anything you'll know about it because we have your forwarding address and will send you the bill" No one could look up for us to see if the account was current and so July rent was billed as well as 2 charges for gas at $193 even after I handed them a check the day of move out.
The laundry room was constantly flooding with multiple washers out at a time and there was a large problem of clothes being stolen from the dryers.
I am now over around the corner at 420 E. Ohio and we have a larger place for less money. The doormen are friendly unlike Jim in tower A and maintenance is great and responsive.
McClurg is livable for about a year or 2, but there are better places in the neighborhood that are much less aggravating. After 4 years there I do not recommend this place with RMK as the manager.
