It's alright

I have lived here for one year. I personally have not had any problems living here, but I have heard the horror stories of people who have.

The location is great...for me. It's a close commute to the Loop and it's about 2 blocks from Michigan Ave. It can get a little noisy on the streets late a night with all the sirens and drunk people, but I expected that living in the city.

There always seems to be construction going on either in the building or outside it and it drives me crazy. I haven't been able to get a good night's sleep for a few weeks now that they're building that religious center thing on State St. at 6 AM!! That's gotten under my skin, but hopefully it'll be over soon.

The elevators... Well, they're not great, but I've been in worse. They are unreliable though. Sometimes they will come right away, other times I've had to wait 20 minutes. And the worst is when all 4 of them break down at once. That has happened a few times more than I'd have liked. Oh, and the water system breaks too much. Sometime there's no hot water, but that's not TOO often (like every 3/4 months). Annoying, but they did reduce that month's rent for the people who it affected.

The workout center is new and nice. I enjoy using it. And it's open 24 hours so that is convenient.

Some of the staff (office, door, maintenance) is THE BEST, and some are THE WORST. It really depends on who you deal with. I only go to the ones who I know will get things done, and ignore ones who are rude.

There are an interesting bunch of characters who live at One East. Most people are totally normal, but there are a few whackos. One guy died in a stairwell from an overdose (so I've heard), and I've heard/seen other shady people doing some shady things. But I personally have never felt unsafe. Just make sure to lock your door when you leave.

I really like that I have a balcony, it's a lot of fun in the summer, especially because you can have a grill. The floor to ceiling windows are nice too. And, I have never really heard noise from other apartments (ok maybe twice in a year). Maybe I just have quiet neighbors though.

Overall, I would say that this is a good place to live if you're just starting out and it's your first apartment. It's a good price for a decent place in an expensive area. That's just my take on it. Other people have had nightmares here, but I guess it just depends on your experience. (And NO, I'm not an employee of the building.)
