When I moved to chicago I called them and asked if they had a studio. They said the did and I told them I'll get there and sign a lease. When I got there, the lady I spoke to told me none were available, just one bedrooms. I finally was given a studio, but about a year into my stay there, the management saw my recycling in the kitchen and wanted me to have regular inspections and basically have no real lease, just month to month. Terrible staff, and their one grocery store has equally terrible people as well.
The apartments have odd floor plans, due to the building's octogonal design.

First, until you sign a lease or give the apartment company some money to hold an apartment because no one's going to keep an apartment vacant just for you. That's life in the city, and it's worse up north with smaller buildings with apartments that rent fast. Also--what kind of recycling are you doing that you need "regular inspections." Not sure what the month to month is all about, but sounds to me like your hobby/job/whatever is a little...odd.
