This place is a newly constructed modern day PROJECT-literally! Don't be fooled! It will not be disclosed at the time of rental that there are more Section 8 families living in this development, than working class, regular rent (market rate) paying tenants. While Section 8 is a viable option for those who need it, everyone that has it doesn't always deserve it. There are numerous families who previously lived in the Henry Horner Homes (CHA project development) now residing here. When I viewed the building that I live in before I actually moved it was immaculate, spotless stair ways & common grounds. My first horror was the day that I was actually moving in. I came to bring some things to my new apartment this evening, only to be welcomed by a hallway full of thugs that were having an altercation coming from a very loud party directly in the unit beneath me. They were yelling at one another hanging on the banisters smoking in the hallway, etc. As time progressed I began to notice the children that ran through the building and loitered in the hallways constantly! During the short time that I've been here they have written on the walls on every level of this four level building. They leave candy paper, sunflower seeds, chicken bones on the floors of the hall and outside the buildings. This building that I stay in has a stale musty scent from marijuana and cigarette smoke as soon as you walk in from the outside. Particular units have constant traffic, and about a million adults and children living there. There is constant loitering day and night, in front of the buildings with lawn chairs, card tables, etc. especially during the summer. I've had to call the police on several occasions. Since I've been here I've had Drug Detectives knock at my door on two separate occasions looking for someone who lived in the building. I have witnessed numerous police vehicles visiting constantly throughout the development for various disturbances. This place is not worth the amount of money that they will charge you! There is much too much rift raft floating around. Management changes constantly! There has been no resolutions, it is only getting worse! As soon as my lease is up, I'm moving!

Eventhough I don't rent through them I do stay in the area in one of the condo buildings. This area is loud during the day, people and kids are constantly walking the streets all day and talking extremely loud. I am black but the building I stay in is a mostly mixed building and quiet which I am so glad and thankful for. My hopes is to stay in this unit for awhile till I'm ready to buy something. But it does seem rather ghetto-ish.

Where/what would you suggest for a grad student that will be attending UIC in the fall? I haven't read very good reviews of any of the apartments near campus

You sound like a racist person trying to justify your racist views by claiming to be "black" because that will make your sterotypical comments, like the person who commented before you about "chicken in the halls," "kids running around," and so forth justified. Stop judging ppl. based on their socio-economic status. One person made the claim that the place is unfit because of the persons who have section 8. But have you stopped to ask the ppl you saw in the halls if they were the "market rate" elitist group you so proudly claim you are a part of? You just made the ASSumption the "rift rafts" were section 8. What proof do you have? Did you see their applications or is this evidence of your racist, elitist, and self righteous outlook and perhaps white privilege that allows you to judge and discriminate against people who like you, are simply seeking a place to call home. Stop judging. If you hate it so much, then move. If you are better than that place, then move. If this is a place that is beneath you, then move. The stereotypes and marginalization of the poor and people of color continues to be perpetuated by such ignorant and biased comments.

wow, calm down, they were just giving their honest opinion of the building. they were commenting on what they saw. They quite obviously did not ask anyone about who was or wasn't section 8, because they don't feel comfortable talking to those people. jesus, it's a review of an apartment building, not an editorial in the times. calm down.

I have been living here well over 6 months and OMG it IS the projects. The people living beside me try to intimidate my family, they are loud, obnoxious, and down right mean. During the night there is a congregation of ppl in the streets and in front of my window which is their perogative. What bothers me is the pure disrespect for those who have to work the next morning. If they simply sat and talked--fine. They instead curse, loud talk about the weed they smoke all night and how they sleep all day. IT IS RIDICULOUS AND SAD. You can beautify an area but if you allow uncaring individuals to habitat then Henry Horner here we go again. I too will be moving as soon as my lease is done.
