You may want to avoid Mason Properties

The manager of Ashbury Court has been nothing but helpful, polite, and nice. She always seems very friendly when we see her. However, the complex is owned by Mason Properties, and apparently Mr. Mason is an incredibly extreme conservative Republican. We actually received some propaganda in the mail from him with the Mason Properties logo on it. It was disturbing, to say the least. People from DeKalb may be aware of him, as this postcard mentions that he writes to the newspaper often, but having moved in from out of town, I was unaware of this fact. I'm just really, really disturbed by this postcard I received and very thankful I'll be moving out this summer. If you are a liberal or democrat and have any principles, you may just want to avoid doing business with this man. I wish I had.
Other than that, the apartment is a little old, but decent. Our kitchen is straight from the 1970s, appliances and all. The heaters and air conditioning (the only a/c unit is in the living room) aren't completely effective... we've had some REALLY uncomfortable hot and cold days and nights. A lot of things have broken, but they are good at coming out to fix them pretty quickly. The price of rent is cheap compared to the Chicago suburbs, but after living here a little while I discovered that you can find cheaper places out here. I've felt safe enough here. I get a little freaked out at night outside though. It could just be a little more well-lit. It's not too loud and crazy here, but the walls/floors/ceilings are thin. We can hear people arguing and babies crying in other apartments, and if people are talking in the hallway, you might as well be standing right next to them. They have pretty strict rules about not having parties. You aren't even allowed to have more than 10 people in your apartment at one time. One other thing I've heard is that they never give back much of the security deposit (which is $1 less than a month's rent), which doesn't seem fair - I can report back on my own experience on this in a few months.
As I mentioned earlier, the manager of Ashbury Court is very good, which is why I'm giving Staff a four-star rating. But the one time I needed to call the 24-hour service number, the lady who I talked to didn't seem that nice. And, due to the unprofessionalism of Mr. Mason and his inappropriate mailings, I have very little respect for him and unfortunately would never recommend a Mason Property location to any of my friends, family, or acquaintances.
