I am very satisfied living at the Ellwood View Apartments. If I ever have a maintenance issue (which is minor and rare), all residents have the cell phone number of the super who comes right out within a day or two. The building is very quiet, unlike a lot of apartments in DeKalb. A lot of residents are professors or grad students at NIU, but you do not have to be affiliated with NIU to live here. I have never seen the police here for any reason. I have not heard of any crime happening here. Water and garbage are included in the rent. Everyone gets a carport, which is really nice in the winter especially. Everyone gets a dishwasher and washer/dryer. The doors have two deadbolts, with only one accessible from the hallway. The apartments and hallways are all very clean. Also, you are very close to Jewel and Walgreens and anything else you might need.
Some minor negatives are that I have an inside corner apartment, which can get a little dark at times. I wish there were windows in the bathrooms for ventillation. They are good about plowing snow in the parking lot, but not great about salting. The appliances are older, especially the stove, but it still works fine. It's all electric (no gas), so heating up the oven takes longer, and electric is a bit more expensive than gas. The negatives are no where near enough to make you want to move out.
All in all, this is a rare find in DeKalb.
