Nice place, bad neighborhood

I was one of the first residents to live in the Reserve when it was built, and I lived there for three years as an undergrad at Northwestern. The apartments themselves are pretty nice compared to anything else you could get in that area. The amenities are decent-in unit washer and dryer, the gym is small but you can get a machine most of the time. It's also nice to have a couple of grills outside in the summer, except that no one from management ever seems to think to clean them. The two bedroom one bath I lived in was more than enough room for me and my boyfriend, the kitchen was big enough for the few times we did cook, and the living room is a great size for having company over. However, the management/leasing office team were awful. They were rude, particularly to their younger student population. Our complaints and requests often required multiple phone calls, particularly concerning our dishwasher that never seemed to fully clean anything or our smoke detector that would go off at random times. Also, if you attend Northwestern, it's a decent 10 minute walk to class, but double or triple that if there is ice on the ground, as no one shovels the sidewalks in that neighborhood. The parking garage is nice, but has a great potential for accidents, as everyone seems to think the speed limit is 50 mph. Lastly, as elegant as the Reserve is, it could not be closer to the crappy part of Evanston. Don't walk alone at night, whether male or female, as muggings are frequent in the area, as most NU students already know. The restaurant across the way has been robbed multiple times.
So yes, the Reserve is very nice, especially for a college student, but it has management issues at times, and the safety issues you might except with southern Evanston.
