The Chaumont

 

You know how everyone finds that incredible apartment once in their lives, a place that's ridiculously underpriced yet is way cooler than other places in your neighborhood that are twice the price' Well, the Chaumont is it.

Check this out:
- It's in downtown Evanston, so it's walking distance from everything: just two blocks south of Whole Foods, four blocks from an El stop, and three blocks west of Lake Michigan.
- It's across the street from a public park that occupies the entire block.
- It's one of the most beautiful buildings in town, a historic landmark from 1927.
- Private courtyard with umbrella tables.
- Valence windows.
- Hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace.
- Reserved parking available.
- Spacious storage and on-site laundry machines.
- Terrific maintenace guy--friendly and dependable.

All that, and my two-bedroom flat goes for the same price as a one-bedroom across the street that's much uglier and hasn't got a fireplace.

Okay, it's not perfect.

The wiring hasn't been updated since original construction, so most rooms have only one outlet, and most are two-pronged.

You have to be careful not to run juice-guzzling appliances simultaneously (e.g.

hair dryer microwave) or you'll blow a fuse.

Because the building is on Chicago Avenue, it can get a bit noisy outside sometimes.

The wooden floors are a bit creeky too, but I consider those to be very minor annoyances compared to all the benefits.
