Worst apartment ever

From: -Anonymous-

Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2006

This is the worst experience with an apartment I've ever had.

Noise:
The walls are paper-thin throughout the complex. If you have quiet neighbors and are facing a parking lot, this should not be too much of a problem. If, however, you are facing a courtyard or another play-friendly area as I was, expect lots of noise. The kids in the complex play in the courtyards, pool, tennis courts, etc. I have absolutely nothing against kids and they have every right to play outside, but the walls are so thin that they may as well be screaming right in your living room.

Construction:
Throughout my year living at Brookview, there was heavy construction going on. Normally, this means an improvement of the property, but in this case it just led to inconvenience and noise with little improvement. In addition, I had a scaffolding standing directly outside my bedroom window for 4 months. It was positioned in such a way that anyone could climb up it to get to my balcony (or window). Workers came early to work during the week and often on weekends. Instead of doing a full day's work to get the job done sooner, they worked between 3 and 4 hours so that the worked stretched out even longer.

Rent:
When I was first looking at the apartment, I was told the rent increase the following year would be average, around 5%. When the time came to renew my lease, the rent had increased 10%. Maybe this was due to the improvements they thought they'd made over that year, but the improvements were minimal and they knew what "improvements" would be made well before I came to look at the apartment.

Maintenance:
Since the time I moved in I had a serious drainage problem in my bathtub. When I say serious, I mean that I would sometimes have to stop in the middle of a shower for a few minutes because the water was about to overflow. After I was done, the bathtub took 30 minutes to drain. Needless to say this created more than an inconvenience since it made the bathtub almost impossible to clean. I put in 4 maintenance requests over 8 months before the problem was fixed. Clearly, they knew how to fix it but didn't bother doing so.

Carpet:
When I came to see the apartment, I was told that the carpet in my unit would be changed before I moved in. The gentleman showing me the apartment saw and felt how bad it was even before I did and he volunteered the information. Needless to say, the carpet was never changed. It was so worn down and disgusting that I couldn't walk around barefoot. It had almost no padding and felt like a brillo pad to the touch.

Property condition:
I have a friend who also lived in the complex, but in another building. She found mold growing up her walls from the floor. Upon further inspection, she dicovered that the mold was just painted over before she moved in and it took a while for it to come up the wall again.

Internet:
When I first went to see the apartment, the manager told me they would have Comcast cable and high speed internet service within 1 month of my move-in date. They never got it. They stayed with the old cable company, which set up what it called a high speed internet service. In actuality, all this service is a T1 line (they have no increased it to 2 T1 lines) that is shared by the entire complex. Not only is this slow (especially during peak hours), but it had frequent outages and it costs as much as Comcast charges. I would find myself calling the cable company multiple times a week sometimes because the service was down or too slow to use (websites would not even load). To make it worse, they "reserve the right" to shut off any apartment's internet access if they deem the apartment is using too much bandwidth. I tried several times to find out how much was too much and was told they could not give me a specific value. As I was moving out, my boyfriend overheard the manager talking to a potential resident, telling her Brookview will have Comcast in one month.

All in all, this property is in horrible condition and the management has no interest in correcting the problems, but would rather cover them up and lie about them to lure people into signing a lease. Don't move here.
