I expected a lot more for the money

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2001
Parking: Tiny, shallow spots, barely able to fit my compact car.
Noise: Could easily hear people outside, as well as footsteps upstairs. Our floors squeeked terribly as well.
Grounds: The best thing about this place is that it looks nice from the outside.
Safety: The grounds were kept up but there were no other security measures taken such as alarm systems, guards, etc..
Exercise Facilities: None provided, no common meeting area for residents, other than outside walkways.
Laundry: Facilities seemed new and clean, cost $2 total for wash and dry. Only 2 machines provided so access was severely limited. We usually had to wait until late evening to early morning to squeeze in a load (between midnight and 3am).
Ease of Move in: Grand Oaks has a horrible building floor plan. To access our apartment on the second floor we had to pass through 5 doors. Needless to say this made move in, as well as simple tasks such as grocery trips difficult.
Recycling access: None provided.
Construction and Appliances: Below average at best, and all of the appliances were old and in need of service.
Water Pressure: Seemed fine.
Electricity layout: Not enough wall jacks and we had a lot of power spikes as well. We had to purchase special equipment to keep our computers from being damaged. Definately not recommended for Computer users.
Telephone wiring: Two jacks provided. 1 in the kitchen and 1 in the bedroom closet (if you could call it a jack, we were never able to get it to work consistantly). Definately not recommended for Computer users.
Pests: About a week after move in we noticed roaches in the kitchen. A few days later we found a note on our door that the management would be performing a "routine preventative spray" and that we should take precautions with our dishes etc.
Neighborhood: Fine, the grounds were nice and most of the people we ran into seemed friendly.
Freeway access: Very close to 94.
Service: We were only in the apartment for 3 months and never made a service call so I can't comment on this.
Office/staff: The one lady who ran the office seemed nice but was sometimes out of the office when she should have been there. She treated us fairly poorly after we turned in our 30 day notice to break our lease early.
Rent increase: We didn't live here long enough to experience a rent increase.
I would not recommend this complex to a friend. I believe it is below average compared to other buildings in the area. I have also lived at Country Faire Village apartments in Grayslake. They were much cleaner, nicer and newer with a very helpful and friendly staff. They also provide recycling, a gym, lounge area, pool, tennis courts, ponds, dog run, and optional garages at Country Faire Village, whereas Grand Oaks provides none of these. Its worth the $100 more a month to live elsewhere.
