Overpriced & Underinsulated

Moving from out of state, I went on the recommendation of a realtor assigned to us by my employer's relocation department (bad idea). Once you add in water/sewer/garbage the rent is close to $1400 a month (including pet rent) for the "Woodlyn" model apartment with it's own entrance. Add to that gas & electric and it gets less attractive.

My last apartment was on the back side of a 1920's bungalow with single pane windows. I thought we'd be moving to a warmer winter place since this is newer construction...but it's just as breezy here. Our pipes freeze any time it drops below 10F (which isn't unusual in Chicago). Before the winter, management sent out notes to keep the apartment temp at 65 degrees or higher. Now they're asking us to keep it higher than 70 degrees. The heating ducts run through poorly insulated attic space, so by the time it gets to our bedroom it's cold.

On the plus side, the place is quiet, clean, and they quickly respond to maintenance requests. Steve is the best maintenance guy - some of the others aren't as great.

However, for the expense of heating their badly insulated place, we would have been better off renting a house.

Hi! I've lived at Woodlake for a little over a year now in the same model you mention. I've never had any problems with freezing pipes.

I wish that I knew this website existed before moving here this summer. I cannot wait for my lease to be over and the only reason why we chose to move to an apartment rather than a house is because we are to be moving out of state soon. I am not looking forward to this winter here now knowing this. It just adds problems on top of problems.
