I know this is crazy but I sold my house in the city to rent a townhouse in HLT. I was tired of the cars doing 70mph down side streets, car stereo systems that cost more than the car they were installed in, liquor stores opening at 7am, and the substandard education my kids got in the Chicago Public Schools. It was rough paying for the upkeep and maintainence of an 118 year old house with a husband who isn't a MR. FIX IT. The townhouses are a decent size, it holds me, my hubby, and our 5 kids. The finished basement is what sold me when I came to view it. We have 3 bedrooms upstairs with 2 full bathrooms. The first floor has a half bath. We have a nice sized concrete patio for summer entertaining. Each townhouse allows washer/dryer hookups in the basement. When I have had to call the office for maintainence issues they have responded the same day if not the next. I have never seen a cockroach, only spiders and now these damn cicada's. I got $100 off my first months rent after signing my 2nd lease, complete carpet cleaning after signing my 3rd, and was promised new carpet on all 3 floors when I sign my 4th. I have no complaints about my actual unit. However I do hear horror stories about the apartment buildings. I have personally witnessed the poor upkeep, vandalism, and neglect that the residents children have caused. I have seen these kids chase and kill the geese on the property. Because there are no wastebaskets throughout the complex the ground is the garbage can. There are potato chip bags, freeze pop plastic, pop cans, and the occasional empty marijuana bag on the ground. The apartments are the perfect size if your family is one that is on the go alot and comes home to eat and sleep. There is no storage facilities in the building. You get warnings if your bicycles aren't hung from bike hooks. The hallway carpet reeks of the different ethnicities cooking. They've instituted a buzzer system, camera's, and even security guards within the complex. You get evicted if your children get into a fight with kids who they'll be friend with the next day. They are pretty lax on rent being paid within the first 5 days of the month. On the 6th day the $50 late fee is applied. They send around threatening 5day notices, but personally I have paid my rent as late as the 22nd of the month. The school systems CCSD180.org and Hinsdale86.org are top rated. I have twins in 3rd, one in 6th, one in 7th, and one who is a senior and they have all excelled. Bottom line. Townhouses are quiet with a lot less traffic.
