Great Apartments!

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2005
We lived here for about three years. When we moved in we had one child. As soon as we found out we were pregnant with our second we put our names in for a first floor- we moved to the first floor about two weeks before she was born. We loved living here. It can be tiring living on the third floor, but if you can do it- it is great exercise. I lost weight while we lived up there.
The kitchen is tiny with little storage, but there are things that can be done about that. In our third floor apartment we had enough room to install shelves on the wall that worked out great for us. In the first floor apartment there wasn't room behind the door, so we bought a baker's rack and ate in the dining room. Keeping a table in the kitchen is pretty tight, especially if there are more than two people eating. I recommend removing the kitchen door (if it has not already been done) as the kitchen has a tendancy to get stuffy, especially when cooking.
The electrical system could use an update. We learned early on that we could not have certain appliances on at the same time or we would blow a fuse and there are too few outlets for the modern household with its many electrical devices. We had power stips in just about every room.
The management is great as is the staff. One staff member, Jacob, was particularly helpful when it came to convincing my young son to climb the stairs to our third floor (when that failed he would often carry him for me). The apartments are very well maintained and the grounds are beautiful.
The nearby park has a playground (renovated in 2005), baseball field, sand volleyball, tennis courts, small ampitheater, and a great sledding hill. There are concerts throughout the summer at the ampitheater. The library, downtown LaGrange, Metra, and the YMCA are all a pretty easy walk. Brookfield Zoo is a very short drive. It can also be reached via bikepaths or an ambitious walk. There are several neighborhood playgrounds within walking distance and there is a small playground at Homestead itself.
I did have trouble with flooding in our first storage unit- there was a leaky pipe. They were quick to try to repair it, but it took a few tries. I kept my things in plastic bins and had little trouble. All my other maintenance requests were handled quickly and resolved. Some of the staff live on the grounds so they are able to respond quickly, even to emergencies in the middle of the night.
There are no assigned parking spots (unless you rent a garage). The only time we had trouble with parking was usually at night on the weekends. I suspect that it was a result of visitors illegally parking in the lots (they are supposed to park on the streets). We always eventually found a spot, but it would be in a lot by another building, not ours. The last year we had one garage spot. We never had a problem with it.
As I said this was a great place to live. Everyone was friendly and the nieghborhood can't be beat. I highly recommend it.
