Renewed Lease for Third Year

I don't understand where a lot of these negative ratings come from. On one hand, I'm thinking maybe I live in a quieter, cleaner building than the other people who have posted here (there are multiple buildings). On the other hand, I'm wondering if it's only because people who usually do reviews online leave negative reviewd because they need an outlet.
Well, here's my review. We like it here. We've never had any major problems. We just renewed our lease for our third year here. We did think about moving, but that was in the hopes to find a cheaper place.
Our neighbors for the most part have always been friendly, quiet, and respectful. Sometimes children have run in the halls. It's happened about three times in the last two years that we had to call security because children were running up and down the halls and making noise around 10 at night. Security showed up within 10 minutes each time and the noise disappeared.
I think overall there is pretty good upkeep of the place. During the spring/summer/fall, landscapers come on a weekly basis to pick up garbage outside and cut the grass. In the winter, they are pretty good at snowblowing the sidewalks when there is a big storm. They take out the trash during the week, but sometimes during the summer months it can pile up during the weekend. This was also the case in other apartments I've lived in.
Two fire alarms have gone off twice in the last two years for our building. Both were caused by the same dryer in one of the laundry rooms and it was smoke. They finally replaced all the machines in the building with new ones last week so I can't complain. I was disappointed the first time the alarms went off...we had called security after about 5 minutes not knowing if this was a test or something because no one smelled or saw or anything and they didn't know the alarms had been going off. The second time they went off (about a year later), security was in the building within minutes helping to evacuate then informing everyone it was a false alarm so I'm happy they improved in that way.
We've put in work orders in the past and they've always come through...generally within 4 hours. We had an emergency one night around 2 am on a weekday...water was coming through our ceiling (neighbors had left the sink on) and we called and left a message for maintence (standard procedure). They showed up within 10 minutes...I was pleasantly surprised thinking it'd be more of a hassle in the middle of the night on a weekday.
Complaints: yeah, sometimes there are obnoxious kids in the parking lot or hanging in the stairways. Usually this is when school gets out for the day, but a lot of them keep busy in the basketball court. A handful of them have been disrespectful, but I don't take that as a reflection on the apartment buildings (I've worked with children for a number of years though so I know how they can be).
Other complaint: we had roaches for a while. Disgusting. We were without them for a whole year so I know it wasn't us. There was a family who moved in downstairs and when they moved in, we got them. They exterminated, we put out our own traps, and the family ended up moving (they were only there about 6 months). The roaches are gone. It was disgusting, yeah, but I really feel they were brought in with my neighbors and I was happy with riverwood's response.
Yes, there are problems here, but you get them anywhere. Overall, I have been satisfied with riverwood's response to emergencies, pests, and maintenance requests. I think it's pretty well lit at night, but I'd be happy with adding more. Security staff seems pretty helpful and accessible, but I'd like to see them more. I feel like they had a stronger presence the first year. Maintence has always been friendly and informative. Janitorial staff does a good job cleaning (at least on my floor), but I do think something needs to be done on the weekends for the trash because it can stink. My biggest complaint would be when a washer or dryer breaks down, I think riverwood should act more quickly to get it fixed (in the past, seems to take two or three weeks and no signs are posted so you lose your quarters).
Overall, a good experience and we're happy to be living here a third year. It's nothing spectacular but we're satisfied and never have had any issues with anything here.
