My friend was in a one bedroom off the lake that was just gorgeous, so we decided to move into a two bedroom together. They had no two bedrooms available, but advised us that a one bedroom with a den was very similar and the person in the second bedroom would only have a smaller room by one foot. We asked to see a one bedroom with a den, but they didn't have any empty for us to view. We signed the lease and that was that.
When we moved in we discovered the balcony was off the den. So I had people tramping through my room to smoke, grill, sit outside, etc. There also was a pantry door to the den from the living room, which made it impossible to get to sleep if someone was in the living room. If they had mentioned these "small" details, we would have waited for a two bedroom.
Carpet in the bathroom was a pain, and it was nearly impossible to clean the bathtub. There is a gray film on the bottom of the tub that will not clean off, no matter what cleaner I tried. Same with the counter tops in the bathroom and in the kitchen. Just impossible to keep clean.
Our thermostat was broken, so the heat/air conditioning would just stay on constantly... making the apartment unbearable in the winter and freezing in the summer. It was difficult to keep the apartment at a comfortable tempature and the electric bills were enormous. We called maintenance several times, and they were there quickly, but it was never resolved correctly. We just gave up.
One of the drawers in the kitchen broke, and maintence was there again quickly, but again the issue was never resolved correctly. Now the drawer is propped up.
The closet in the den detached from the ceiling the first time I tried it, and maintenance never came to fix it.
As for pets, that's another issue. I was pet sitting for my mom for a week, and a neighbor complained about barking from our apartment. The office called me and let me know that I would have to pay a non-refundable pet deposit of $150 to keep a dog for a week. I asked about a single evening and they said they have the same policy.
If you live off the lake, expect HUGE centipedes, and expect them often. When my roomie lived in the one bedroom, he found a new centipede every day. When we moved away from the lake, we saw maybe one or two the entire year.
I could go on and on about the problems.
