crummy house

The house I was in had many problems. It was definitely not worth what I paid for it. The floor was uneven and held up in the basement by a 4x4 board on a cinder block. The center of the kitchen floor was at least 6" taller than the edges. The heater got it's air from a hole in the floor with a grate covering it. There was no air conditioning. The basement was covered in dirt, I initially thought that it was a dirt floor until I realized that there were cracks all over the basement where the rain would come in with mud. There were several dead mice and even a dead bird in the basement. In January when I was gone on winter break the entire month I turned the heat down to 60 degrees and the heating bill was over $300 (this was before the recent utility price hike). There wasn't a shred of insulation in the walls from what I could tell. It was always cold and drafty with it's single pane glass windows. The windows didn't even have locks on them when I moved in, I had to request to have them added (which they did). Don't even think about getting your deposit back, there were many deductions for "damage" which was from the place just falling apart. Also there was quite the hefty "cleaning fee" even though I scrubbed that place clean. The secretary even came over and said that it looked clean. The miniblinds were even removed and scrubbed. There were ants pretty much nonstop in the summer, he refused to do anything about it. The neighbors had a noisy dog but that isn't Rector's fault. The house was in quite the colorful neighborhood. When the neighbor tells you to "watch out for my grandson because he likes to fight" you know you are in for a treat. The abandoned house next door with ten cats living in the basement was also fun. On the positive side, the maintenance people were always there either that day or the next to fix whatever problem I had. They also hooked up a new stove because the old one was a dinosaur and burned food more often than cooked it. Renting from Rector was definitely an educational experience on renting. To quote my roommate "Slumlord of Macomb!".
