A good bargain

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2005

We lived in the Colony for about two years from Aug,03 to June, 05. The overall experience was nice. So thumbs up for the Colony.

Positives:
1. Great location. Pace buses are available at a walking distance to go to CTA station, Woodfield Mall, Loews theatre etc. You can walk to the grocery stores including specialty stores and different types of food joints including Denny's, Indian, Chinese, Thai etc.
2. Very responsive staff. We got all our problems fixed very quickly.
3. Plenty of open areas with a very good gymnasium.
4. Quality of the apartments. The quality is good and all the amenities provided were up to our expectations.
5. Renter-friendly policy for adjusting the security deposit. We lived there for two years and only $50 was deducted from the security deposit.

Negatives:
1. Easy access to the apartment for outside people. There is not central locked door for the apartments. So anyone can walk up to your door and knock.
2. Of late, the quality of people moving into the apartments declined. We used to hear loud and noisy songs specially in the weekends and it used to bother us a lot.
3. Heat consumption in the winter. Since in this apartment, the cooking and heat are on electricity, the utility bills go up significantly in the winter. The heat retention system is not too good and hence the consumption is more in the winter. You can easily add $60-$70 to your rent as the overhead of the electricity bill when comparing against an apartment where cooking and heat are on gas and they are included in your rent.

Summary:
I saw a lot of other apartment buildings in the area. I think The Colony offers a good value for money. The quality is not "the" best, but at the same time, the rent is very reasonable. If you do not have a car, this is the best in the locality. All in all, you can move in here expecting a reasonably good experience.
