Nice - Not Perfect

My husband and I have lived here about a year and a half. We love, love, love our apartment - comfortable layout, mostly quiet, 2 balconies which we use all the time. Parking nearest our building is plentiful - everyone shares parking but closest to us is larger than by some of the buildings. My biggest complaint is that the office staff often either pretends to be or is actually completely uninformed about anything. I called to report that there was a dog in my building which was supposed to be dog free. I was told that they would check into it, that dogs were not allowed in my building. 2 days later I called again, having not heard back and was told by someone else that the whole complex was now "dog friendly." My door bell has never worked consistently. The so called motion sensor lights appear to be more like randomly activated lights - my husband and I sat out one night tried to determine a pattern but there was none apparent. They changed over from landlord paid to tenant paid heat and had basically no information as to projected costs and did not actually inform people until they gave you a letter with your lease renewal. This past summer they had to make major pool repairs and they did not tell anyone unless you asked and after a few weeks of asking, they got a little snippy and said that they would announce to everyone that the pool was open but they did not, not even a poster - they did have a nice pool party/cook out a couple of weeks after the pool was open. Most recently I called to ask if we were required to have a carbon monoxide detector per the new Illinois law. I was told that all they knew was that they were not required to provide the tenants with a detector. They were unable to tell me if that meant I should run out and get my own or if I didn't need one. I called the fire department non-emergency number and was told that since we have no combustion fuel sources in our apartment (everything is electric) we did not require one. There appears to be a huge gap in communication. Every month they deliver this ridiculous waste of paper they call a newsletter which never has any apartment news in it - although there is usually a recipe and movie reviews... But the general upkeep is good and they do resolve most problems within a reasonable amount of time, especially if you call back. The rats were an issue outside this summer but they were working with the Village and I haven't seen any in a while. I overall feel very safe and comfortable here and they do have many nice ammenities - the pool, the clubhouse with workout equipment and internet access, parking, convenient location (unless you hate airplanes - I don't really notice them), nice areas to walk around - the complex is pretty (rustic) and there is a bike path and field behind. The volleyball court and barbeque area they advertise probably used to be very nice but they could stand a little clean up and repair.
