I lived here in 1979. When we moved in, the carpet had not been cleaned, there were no closet doors, and messy paint cans were still in the bathtub. I took LOTS of pictures before cleaning up the mess. I think we got them to clean the carpet around our already-moved-in furniture and put in doors, but we went back and forth with the management office for a few weeks before they finally sent someone over. They kept insisting that we were crazy and that we had doors and the carpet had been cleaned prior to move-in!
In the winter, my roommate and I complained that our apartment was freezing. Two maintenance men in heavy parkas came in, stood in our living room for a minute, declared that it was warm to them, and left. We called them back the next day and they decided that there was a "bubble in the heat line" below our apartment. It took them a week to fix it.
In the hottest part of the summer, the living room air conditioner conked out. We called maintenance, who promptly came and pulled the air conditioner out of the wall. They did not cover the gaping hole to the outside, and bees swarmed in and out of our apartment for the five days we were without an air conditioner.
I thought I was nuts, but during the night I always thought I heard chewing sounds in the walls and over my head. Could be that they had a mouse problem even then.
Our neighbors behind our unit fought constantly and the husband beat his wife on a regular basis. It was so loud, pictures were falling off OUR walls and the units weren't even connected! They also had a huge dog who had no qualms about relieving himself against our door or leaving packages in the hallways and on the stairs. One day I came home to find their front door off the hinges and propped against the doorway -- this was how management "punished" people who were late with or didn't pay their rent. The door was replaced the next day, but without the doorknob and locks. It stayed like that for days.
The neighbor across the hall from us told me that he had a "skylight" in his dining room! I was confused because I didn't know that was an available feature, so he brought me over to his place to show me a gaping hole (about 3 feet x 5 feet)in the ceiling over his dining room table. You could actually see the sky! Maintenance had covered the hole with heavy plastic, but he told me that it had been that way for months.
There was a family who lived across from the laundry room and there had to have been 15 people living in that unit. They constantly hogged the washers and dryers so no one else in the building could use them. Despite repeated complaints, management did nothing.
A month before our lease was up, my roommate and I submitted a letter to the management office, informing them that we would not be renewing our lease and that, in fact, planned to use our security deposit as our last month's rent because they were in violation of so many things on the lease (we itemized them) that we felt the lease was now null and void and we weren't obligated to uphold our end of it anymore. The management office refused to accept the Certified letter, but we backed it up with a letter sent regular mail. Something told me to stay home from work the next day, and it's a good thing I did. The very next day two men tried to get into the apartment without even stopping to knock! The chain lock my roommate had installed kept them from entering, and when I asked them what they wanted they said they were painters who had orders to paint our "vacant" apartment. I informed them it was not vacant and they told me we would have to get out immediately. I said we still had to the end of the month and we would be happy to leave then. An hour later, management had our electricity shut off. We had no power except for the refrigerator and, for some strange reason, a socket in the bedroom closet still worked, so we ran extension cords from there all around the apartment. The following day, someone tried to remove our front door, but discovering I was still home, demanded that we get out NOW and left. We moved out a week earlier than planned. Several months later, I got a demand for payment from the management office for several thousand dollars or they would take me to court. I wrote across the invoice that we owed nothing and that we had pictures detailing the condition of the apartment throughout our stay and had documented proof of their illegal practices, so if they wanted to take me to court, bring it on, and mailed it back to them in the enclosed, postage-prepaid envelope. That was the last I heard from Mount Shire.
It sounds like not much has changed in all these years.

It's funny that I had to fill out a moving-out questionaire. I put checked all the negative feedback plus wrote more negative comments on the "other" section. I'd be surprised if the paperwork even gets to the big wigs or better yet since they haven't changed anything about the management for nearly 30 years the big wigs probably don't even care. Anyways, if you have high blood pressure don't move in to this place. I've lost my temper couple times while I was in the leasing office.
