Realistic pros & cons

After reading two different types of reviews, either: "SWC IS THE WORST APARTMENT IN THE WORLD!! STAY AWAY!!" or reading the reviews that are obviously written by the leasing office which are basically free advertisement of them saying "Oh my God! SWC is wonderful and management couldn't be nicer! The maintanance staff is the best! I love it here! I'm never leaving!" I decided I wanted to write my opinion that wasn't either trying to burn SWC to the ground because I don't like one of their employees or trying to endorse it because I work there. So here's a realistic view of SWC from a year-long resident.

Pros:

We really liked the floor plans - there's a lot of space and the apartment is well layed out. The private entries are great.

The monthly rate was relatively cheap (at least before Amli bought the complex - now the rates have skyrocketed) but you have to pay for all utilities *including* waste, sewage, and water.

As far as noise level is concerned, think about it. YOU'RE IN AN APARTMENT. If you're going to be ---- about noise, then you can't be so cheap. Go buy/rent a house. The key to apartment living = background noise. Leave your TV/radio/stereo on low volume so it's quiet enough not to bother anyone else but it's loud enough to drown out the noise of your fat upstairs neighbor in the bedroom (*shudders*).

The maintanance people are pleasant to work with. We have only had a couple repairs needed and they were done timely and effectively so we can't complain there.

The leasing office is helpful, accessable, and friendly. The SWC management was pretty bad but the new Amli management seems good so far.

It's safe and well-lit, we've never felt at risk. However - there are currently two registered sex offenders (aka pedophiles) living in the complex and when we posted fliers to alert people, management immediately removed the fliers. So be warned if you have kids.

Cons:

Not enough garages and it's annoying when you see someone drive across the complex to use the garage in front of your apartment for storage of a few boxes.

Not exactly a con but something to be aware of, they do make sure you pick up your yard clean from dog waste, cigarettes, garbage, etc. But that's a good thing so all you people whining that management is harassing you, do what we did and pick up after your dogs you lazy bums! I'm tired of picking up other people's dog crap that's in MY yard.

Just typical apartment life complaints that you'll get with any apartment. If your neighbors are screaming at each other, or the kid running around upstairs, or when the private-entry people next to you/above you let their door slam shut you'll hear it (and the door slamming actually rock the apartments a little).

Summation:

There are going to be some problems with SWC (now Amli @ Naperville) that they can't do anything about but with the things they have control over, they do a pretty good job. If you have respectful neighbors, you should have a very nice stay. If they're a pain in the butt, then your stay at SWC will be a pain. We're leaving because we bought a house but if we didn't buy one, we'd choose to stay here another year so I recommend it.

I almost forgot that in the summer, ALL the apartments have huge bug issues in the master bathroom in particular.

I appreciate the pro and con list. We have been living at Amli at Naperville since this past Christmas and we enjoy the complex. It is fair to expect loud noises when you choose to live in the apartment style living. We have found the layout to be quite spacious and we like having the grass areas around us for our dog (whom we pick up after) and our 2 year old son.
We find the staff (new and past) to be friendly and the maintence staff to be quick and efficient. We are fortunate to have very friendly neighbors who are understanding of our loud noises (with a dog and child on the second floor.) We find the complex to be very family friendly and much quieter than our last apartment inside and outside. It is nice also, because it backs up to a neighborhood.
