OLD, FALLING APART, MGMT UNRESPONSIVE, MANY PROBLEMS

The Sherry Apartments are good for one purpose to save money. They are fairly inexpensive by today's standards, but the low rent has to be compensated for in value. See below.

While the closets are ample, the metal doors are original from the 70's and often jump off the track. The tracks are dirty and seems like they haven't been cleaned since the 70's. Our patio screen door does not fit the door track and the maintenance staff said they don't have the correct size doors available (so you can't fully close and lock the screen door). The kitchens were "updated" recently, but the floor is self-adhesive tiles that absorb all dirt, grime and anything spilled on them. The refrigerators are the smallest available and don't even fit the area they were meant to fit under the cabinets. The bathroom vanity/cabinet is falling apart due to some sever water damage prior to us moving in. We HAD to lay some temporary carpet in our bathroom because the tile is original and filthy. The shower tiles are the same - old, grimy and dirty. It is very apparent that the maintenance expectations over the last 30's years have not been high. Every repair has been "patchwork" at best. Our towel bars continually fall off the wall, the shower temperature regulator constantly vacillates between freezing and burning hot. We have had maintenance in to repair it (multiple times), but they don't understand the problem well enough to fix it (they keep changing the handle not the regulator). The snow plow that comes through after a major storm does more damage that good. It plows everyone into their parking place. Then the maintenance crew is called in to help shovel residents out so they can get to work. The sidewalks are often icy and unkempt.

The laundry room is very old and even though it's cleaned daily, it's dirty. Water leaks from the pipes on the washers (coming out of the wall). Its hard to wash your clothes and feel like they are clean. There is NO money changer, detergent for sale or rechargeable laundry card available. You must use quarters. The washer is $1.50 per load (30 minute cycle) and the dryer is $1.25 per load (45 minute cycle).

The lobby still has the original 1970's/1980's decor. The "community" furniture has cheap, maroon furniture covers. The fixtures are brass. The elevator is small, dark, slow and dingy. We rarely allow guests to come in through the main door unless the weather is inclement and we worry about their safety, then it's the better option. Otherwise, we let them into our apartment through our patio door to avoid the depressing lobby.

You only get 1 wall-unit air conditioner in the living room and it only cools the living room. You MUST pay $150 for a second unit for the bedroom. You must also keep your blinds closed during the summer to keep the heat out otherwise your air needs to run 24/7 just to keep it relatively cool.

If you have LOW expectations then the Sherry is the perfect place to live. We chose the Sherry so we could pocket one of our salaries for a down payment for our own home. For us, this was a choice of short-term discomfort for long-term relief. If you are looking to make the Sherry your home for an extended period, please read the above carefully.

To be fair, the maintenance staff is nice, very responsive and understanding. We don't hold them responsible for the environment and realize they are just trying to do their job to the best of their ability. The management (1 full-time who starts her day at 10:00am and the other part-time) only deals with the issues they want to deal with and ignores the other issues.
