When we moved in I carefully noted all of the problems with the apartment so I wouldn't be charged for them when we moved out. There were stains on the carpeting, some tiles in the kitchen were ripped, etc. Also, when we moved out I spent days cleaning, vaccuuming, etc so that we'd get our deposit back.
In the end we were refunded less than $300 out of a $800 deposit, and it took 3 months to get that. They wouldn't respond to my phone calls -I had to write them a certified letter in order to get ANYTHING. A second certified letter was sent in order to get a list of charges (which they were supposed to supply within 30 days) and it turns out I was charged for the carpeting and tile that I had noted on my move-in checklist. Pointing it out didn't do any good. Neither did threats of bringing them to court. I never filed the suit -my boyfriend cashed the $280 (or whatever) check. Instead, I'm warning others -kiss your security deposit goodbye!
