Best thing about the Woodlands - closest housing from CMS. Directly across from the parking lot. Most of Woodlands' business is from students (in fact, they paved a walkway from the apartments to the school parking lot). The management knows this: they know what to expect and cater their services/events/etc toward the student mindset.
There are two phases:
Phase 1 (3 floor plans): Older apartments with older appliances and old-fashioned layout. Dinky patio - only useful to keep a trashcan or if you want to stand (it only extends 2 feet outward) out there to have a smoke. 3rd floors have fireplaces. The best thing with phase 1 is the 2-bed/1-bath (the one I have). It has a HUGE master bedroom. Largest bedroom in all of Woodlands. Great for couples - the other room can be a study/storage. Great floor space too. The 2-bed/2-bath is a "dual entry" style, where there is common kitchen and livingroom area. However, the nice feature is that if you choose to (privacy, annoying roommate, etc) you can close a door and lock out your side of the apartment. I don't recommend the 1-bdr. Tiny and it's $800 (vs $900) for my hugh 2-bedroom. If you MUST bet a 1-bdr, get the phase 2 one.
Phase 2 (3 floor plans): Newer layouts (= more efficient use of space) and nice patio for the 2nd/3rd floors. The best feature of the phase 2 apartments is that the 3rd floor ones have high ceilings and a fireplace. The 1-bdr has good floor space, plus you get a small "study" room. It doesn't have a door, so it really is just a study. The two 2-bdr plans are fine.
The management overall is friendly. Clubhouse available for parties, etc. The local dry cleaner comes to the clubhouse, so that convenient. They do ok work - if you got stains, they'll be gone. But don't expect perfect ironing though. Garages available for $100 (wait-listed).
Proximity' Forget it. There's Nothing in North Chicago. Target, restaurants, Office/Home Depot all about 10-15 miles away. There's always Silo and Rockland Cafe, but you can only go there so many times.
