I thought I would write a not so quick review about Bourbon Square for all those looking to rent here. As with any place, there are pluses and minuses, but unfortunately the minuses outnumber the pluses.

The good: HUGE apartment with wood-burning fireplace that feels like a house, huge walk-in closet and cavernous bathroom (in the 1 bedroom), good size garage that is secured from your neighbors, indoor pool & hot tub, and nice high-quality exercise equipment, best size-for-money around (1400sq ft 1 bedroom!), tons of storage space, GREAT location right off Lake-Cook and Rt 53, cable/cable internet provider is great and VERY well priced, they try to have community activities (watch what time you get there though! They run out of food, etc!), parking is decent and you have 2 entrances to each apartment so you have parking options.

The bad: Apartment is falling apart, you can hear everything going on around you (guy upstairs' TV, him STOMPING around, his phone conversations, etc), the heating and cooling system is HORRIBLE (ELECTRIC HEAT! Can't get below 74 in the summer and above 72 in the winter...have complained, been told everything is fine), the property looks depressing, the residents are increasingly lower-income (section 8''') and 'lower class' with way too many people living in a given apartment with dumpy junker vehicles, the pool is FREEZING all the time and smells of urine from time to time, the hot tub isn't so hot many times and is usually dirty, the staff is happy to take your money and sign you up to live there and then ignores you when you need something (they are more interested in getting someone else to sign a lease than help you), insulation is horrible (can feel cold air through the ELECTRICAL OUTLETS!), safety is a concern (2 days after moving in, a masked man ran past us after trying to break into cars), the cops are here EVERY day (usually multiple cars), the appliances are ACIENT (our microwave still has DIALS on it and the washer/dryer don't work well), mailboxes are outside (safety again), and the apartments are pretty dark inside/poor natural lighting.

We don't expect the world, but we expected better than what we have experienced so far. One of the biggest concerns we have is safety, especially with us living on the 1st floor. If you have a large family and need a large place and can't afford much, then this is your place, but don't expect good quality or great neighbors. Overall, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

We plan to move out at the end of our lease.
