Don't Waste Your Time or Your Money

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2002
I have lived at Brentwood for 15 months, and in that time I don't think one month went by without at least two issues requiring a call to management or maintenance.
They rented the apartment above us to college-age kids, knowing that we had small children, even though they had numerous other empty units; for the eight months they lived above us, I called either management or the police at least once a week about the noise, yet it still continues to this day. They continually enter their apartment via the balcony, and in doing so have knocked my Christmas lights down at least twice; complaints to management have gone unheeded.
An apartment down the hall was rented over the summer to somebody with known and verifiable psychological problems, and he caused numerous problems with myself and another neighbor, and was eventually evicted only after I filed a complaint against him with the police department; until he moved, we (myself and my neighbor) lived in fear, always afraid to leave our apartments or to let our children play outside or even cross the hall to play together!
Two of my children, as well as my neighbor's daughter, once went to the playground on property, and were verbally harassed and threatened by some teenagers who are residents of other buildings; when our children attempted to leave without further incident, these teens proceeded to chase our children, throwing rocks and yelling insults at them. When I contacted management and asked if they wanted to handle it or if I should call the police, I was told that there was nothing they or the police could do. Later that week, a police officer informed me that they can come out and attempt to apprehend the teens.
The building we live in is shifting and settling, causing numerous maintenance issues (such as cracked ceilings and walls, and off-kilter door frames, and leaky windows).
The current property manager is lazy and worthless, she is more interested in being friends with everybody than she is in enforcing the property rules and guidelines. Examples are: no laundry usage after 10 pm; no smoking in common areas of the buildings; no music loud enough to disturb other residents (FREQUENT violations have occurred without action by management); pick up after your dog. The property is trashed and I've seen projects in the city of Chicago that look better. Our storage room in the basement next door is a haven for rats and other pests; there is trash all over the place and standing water as well.
I estimate that nearly half of the units here are empty, most of which have stood empty for several months. I have to ask myself why this is so, if Brentwood is such a wonderful community. Management is worthless, and the people they hire for maintenance apparently only need to be breathing in order to be hired.
When we had a plumbing issue in November, maintenance tried to resolve the pipe blockage by pouring sulfuric acid into the drain; of course, when somebody upstairs decided to use their water (as maintenance hadn't asked them not to), it backed up all over and the sulfuric acid caused even more damage than the untreated water had. When one of our bathrooms had water leaking from the ceiling (and the ceiling in the other bathroom was damaged), maintenance actually refused to come out, saying there was nothing they could do until the next day! (Well gee, they couldn't come out, determine if it was bad enough to require shutting off the water, and determine what parts they would need from the supply store') As it was, they said that we had the leak because the upstairs toilet was missing its wax seal (''). Plus when they sent out the painters the ceiling in only one of the bathrooms was fixed.
For what they charge in rent, you would think that they would do at least a halfway decent job of running the property and of fixing maintenance issues. Do they really NEED to replace carpeting and other things every single time somebody moves out' Somehow I don't think so. I'm sure they can cut corners in areas OTHER than maintenance. Plus they really need to hire a property manager that is as good as Valerie Miller (who left over the summer), she didn't care who didn't like her, she ran the community the way it should be run and she didn't take crap from anybody. This new manager lets the other residents walk all over her and she is too weak to enforce the rules.
Don't waste your time or your money, all you will get from Brentwood is a HUGE headache and a LOT of regrets for choosing them.
