Horrible Propery Manager

I currently live here (the 3000 building) and will certainly not renew my lease when it's up in January. They were a MONTH late getting the A/C turned on in the building, and would not return my phone calls asking for a status update. FINALLY they called me back a month later after they got it turned on and acted like there was no problem. Then, I give them a rent check, which they wait SIXTEEN days to deposit. I bounced a check (it was an honest mistake - I don't write bad checks..but they waited so long to deposit it, I lost track.) Suddenly I have a notice that I owe an extra $120 in late fees. Fine, technically it was my fault the check bounced, and yes, I signed the lease that stated what the late fees were. But it's ridiculous for them to wait so long to deposit my check, and THEN come back and charge me late fees because THEY waited so long.
I went in to talk to the property manager and she got mad and defensive because I was pressing her about the air conditioning. She pointed her finger in my face and yelled "Don't you be a smart-a$$ with me!!" And continued to yell and treat me with contempt and disrespect, basically calling me a liar, saying that I never called to ask for a status update. I'll be filing a formal complaint to the owners about the way I was treated, and I'll be including my phone records that show how many times I called them. (This happened yesterday - 6-17-2003)
They have a strict towing policy, but disassociate themselves with the towing company so that when you have a problem you have no course of action. "It's not us, it's them!" The complex is right next to another rental complex where the tenants there blast loud music at all hours of the night, etc...
That being said, they have pretty large apartments for the money - that's what originally convinced me to move in. What a mistake. My brother-in-law and his wife live in a little smaller, little older apartment not too far away where the landlord treats him as a CUSTOMER, the way customers SHOULD be treated. They get repairs taken care of immediately, they're consistent, they're reasonable, and they treat you with respect. You'll get NONE of those things from Runaway Bay once you sign the lease.
Oh, and don't be fooled by the "2 months free rent" move-in deal. I thought it was so great until it came time to sign the lease, and the lease term was 14 months. It sure would have been nice of them to tell me in advance that it was more than a standard 12 month lease. They waited until I was signing to tell me, because it's obviously not that great of a deal if you weren't planning on staying there a while.
Bottom Line - Keep looking; there are better places to live that are managed by honest, decent people.
