Wyndham Club Condominiums - not renter friendly

I've been living at Wyndham Club Condominiums for a little over a year now. Until recently, I have been quite happy here. It's a great location with plenty of shopping and restaurants nearby.

The units are decent sized with one bedroom, and decent closet space. It's equipped with a washer and dryer as well. Perfect for one person (and a dog), but I don't know that I would want to squeeze two people in here.

It also seems to be a fairly secure area. There are a few vagabonds that stray by every now and then though. On one occasion graffiti was sprayed on the outside wall, and many times the aging privacy fence would have boards missing - presumably from being kicked out by the above mentioned vagabonds. More on the fence in a bit, though it does lead into my issue, the propertys maintenance by the Board of Directors.

Here recently, Wyndham Club has begun repainting all building hallways and entry ways. I am all for this, in fact it was way overdue. The work is being done weekdays from 6:00p.m until 9:30p.m. Given that small time frame, we are now into the 3rd week of evening painting. I would not be surprised to see it go one more.

I'm a team player. I made no complaints about the constant smell of fresh paint for over a week, or the jam box in the hallway blaring away until 9:30-10:00. Not a word, even though Wyndham Club Condominiums Rules and Regulations (Chapter 3, sections 27 and 28) clearly state that all contractor work must be complete by 8:00p.m. It was the air compressor that did me in.

I guess it was decided after a week of brushing and rolling, that the paint just wasnt going on fast or thick enough. They started spraying. The air compressor was in the entry way, basically on the other side of my living room wall. It's no exaggeration when I say I could not hear the T.V.

That's when I spoke up. Told them what I thought, clearly and concisely.

"This is absolutely ridiculous. Painters are here, yet again, this evening. I believe this is at least the 4th evening. It is beyond my comprehension why Wyndham would schedule this work in the evenings. Between the smell of the paint, and the noise of the air compressor, I can hardly stand this place. VERY inconsiderate.

Please call me to discuss."

Not having heard back from Wyndham club by end of the next day, I called the office. Judging by the rate of progress being made, I was not looking forward to many more nights of the air compressor. I was told in no uncertain terms the following: (basically verbatim)

*You are a renter, you have no say in this matter.
*Do not contact us directly again. Any complaints or problems must go through the owner.
*A board member contacted the owner, and this project is perfectly acceptable with him.
*If you do not have the patience to put up with a few nights inconvenience, then you have a problem.

So, I call the owner. I really didn't think it was his issue, I was pretty sure he didn't even know they were painting. He didn't. When I relayed what the condo association had told me, he said a few things of interest. I won't speak on his behalf, but it was his opinion that any contractor work being done should be over by 5:00p.m. He also mentioned how rude and evasive the board member was who contacted him.

So, there really is no ending to this story. I mean, they're still here painting at night. I did overhear the painters talking the other night though. I understand they aren't making any money on this gig. That is too bad - I really don't have a beef with those guys. I just think they're part timer painters, and Wyndham Club Condominiums Board of Directors tried to get off cheap - as opposed to hiring a professional outfit. It wouldnt surprise me...well, I wont speculate further.

I guess this would be my advice. If your looking to rent a condo, and are expecting nice grounds keeping, maintenance and friendly service, you might want to look elsewhere. Otherwise you should ensure that your landlord maintains an active role in the condo association. If you're considering buying, take time to review the polices, procedures, rules and regulations. After all, you pay for this "service."

Oh yeah, the fence' The remants continue to make a nice lawn ornament, as they have for the last couple of months now.
