Years at this apartment: 2005 - 2006
I lived here for almost a year. Thought it would be fun downtown, etc. First of all, they get you a whopping $10 a month off the parking next door, which meant I took my chances on the street rather than pay the $60 a month. I was promised cheap parking when I signed on. Secondly, the old guy who owns the building is constantly lurking around, looking like an aged Hugh Hefner and always smoking this stinky cigar. He makes VERY off color comments if you are a young woman. Besides all the normal issues with an apartment, they seemed to have issues with their plumbing a lot. I often found murky water lurking in my bathtub, but that was nothing compared to my friend who also lived on the 7th floor. She ended up with chunks of feces on her floor! The apartment was filthy when I moved in because they got my move in date confused. And finally, and worse than everything else: I found out that one of the maintainance men was going into my apartment when I was gone for the day at work. My boyfriend was home from school over Christmas break and stayed with me one night. I went to work the next morning and he stayed around my apt. He was sitting on the PC, when he heard keys rattle in the lock and assumed I'd come back for some reason. The door opens and in walks this maintainance man! He stumbles over his words for a minute then says "Um, here, I'm supposed to give you this." Hands my boyfriend a sheet of paper with a notice for renters on it and walks out. I got home and got the story from my boyfriend and I FLIP OUT! I called the apartment management, and talked to this total jerk named Travis. He said he'd check into it and call me back. When he did get back to me, he handed me some LAME story about the guy couldn't fit the paper under the door! WHATEVER! I tried it myself and managed to fit 12 sheets under before they started to bunch up. I told Travis that I didn't buy his line of crap, and if it happened again I was moving out. Well, less than a month later, I was home sick from work, and guess what happened' Now, in the interim, I'd been using my own test to find out if this guy was in my apt, by doing this when I left each morning: I'd close my door most of the way, then take a shoe and put it right in front of the door and close the door the rest of the way. At night I'd come home and barely open the door and peek in. If the shoe had been moved, someone had opened my apartment door. If it was still fairly near the door, I was OK. This way, too, the person who opened the door would think that it was just a shoe in the way and wouldn't think anything of it. I also bought an additional lock for my door, since I didn't want this bonehead walking in while I was there. So I bought, instead of a chain or bolt, one of these swing latches that you see on a hotel room door. Like a latch that swings over a ball connected to the door. This allows you to open the door a little to see outside, like with a chain latch, but cannot be kicked open because there is no give in it like a chain. The good thing about this is, you can tell if someone tried to open your door from the outside because the swing part of the latch swings out and prevents the person from opening the door the rest of the way, but doesn't go back into place when you shut the door again and just stays pushed out. Well, about a month after the first incident, I stayed home sick from work one day. I actually threw up on myself, icky I know, and jumped into the shower. About 20 steamy minutes later, and feeling somewhat better, I go into my kitchen for a cuppa. Well, I'll be darned if that latch wasn't swung out as if the door had been opened from the outside and closed again! So, I started packing right then and there. I had all my stuff out by the weekend, and wrote the management a SCATHING letter telling them to tear up my lease and refund my security deposit, or face charges pressed against their maintainance man for breaking and entering, against them for allowing it to happen and not investigating after my first claim, oh, and ALL the bad press they could handle. I had my FULL refund in the mail two days later. If these people are going to be turds, then treat them as such.
