Tenants Not A Priority

I moved into a 1B 1B apartment in 2005 on the 3rd floor, at the time I paid $860/month for my 845 sq. ft unit. After my first year when it came to resign, I recieved the memo about my renewal stating I had to let them know within 60 days, but it had already been about 30 days past the date on the memo (meaning now I was down to 30 days left to make the decision. But it also said that if I were leaving, I had to let them know within 30 days. I informed them of this and they said "well, we just send the note out as a curtosy, it's actually your responsibility to remember that you have 30 days to write us a note that you are not staying". On top of that, my rent increased from $860/month to $975/month. I was outraged and demanded to know why. They claimed that it was due to demand, and that if new tenants came in that this would be their rate. I argued that I was not a NEW tenant, and that I had been loyal for the past 12 months, paying on time, etc. I said what value have you added to my unit for me to have to pay over $100 extra per month' They had no excuse except that "the housing economy has forced people to rent, so we are going with the law of supply/demand". Basically it was BS. I said you have taken the time to re-seal the entire complex when the asphalt was fine, put in new doors on all buildings when ours functioned/looked fine, re-did all the landscaping, power-washed all the buildings.....I think you are charging us in order to pay for all of the EXTERIOR enhances. I told them I had been to almost all other complexes in the area (which is true when I was looking) and that they all have newer amenities, newer cabinets/trim, etc and that their pricing actually matches what they offer. I argued that what I was to now pay was a rip-off. I ended up going all of the way up to the VP of Amli Midwest and going through all of this with him. All I got out of it was being able to paint my walls without having to pay the repaint fee at moveout or repaint it myself.

Then I had issues with the security locks busting all of the time (nice investment with the new doors) and it being open to just about anyone who wanted to come in. I complained about my window screens not sitting correctly in their frame, so they came and used electrical tape to keep them in. I had water spots on the ceiling after a major rain, and even though they did re do the entire roof that summmer, all they did was paint over the water spots instead of removing the damaged ceiling. In 3 years I complained at least 6 times that the ceiling fan and windows in one of the workout rooms did not work...therefore no air circulation. Never got a response, never got fixed. One morning during my 6am workout I walked into the workout room by myself and encountered 3 men sleeping on the floor. Nice.

In October 2008 my lease was up, but I was also in the process of looking at a house. I had no idea when closing was going to be and when exactly I was going to move out. I opted to take the month by month rent rate which was $1300, but then I did not have to pay any fees when I wanted to move out. If I had signed the contract for anothe full lease then broke it, I would have been paying $1100 then another $1100 as my fee of "breaking" a lease. So a few months go bay at my m-t-m rate of $1300 and I get this call that I need to let them know what I was planning to do. I said I was going to continue a m-t-m rate becuase it was going to be about another 60 days before I new when I could move in to my new place. They told me that I had a 3 month limit at the m-t-m rate, and that it was up and that I had to leave or resign a new 12 month lease. I said if you are making an extra $200 on me right now to stay until I know when I can move out, then why can't I continue to pay this for another 60 days at most' They were so inconsiderate. I told them when I knew a date that I would let them know...instead I got calls every day from them wanting to know when I was leaving. I had to go up to the VP of Amli Midwest and complain again. I ranted that I had lived there for 3 years, and just need an extra 60 days to figure out my move-out timing, and that your team won't allow this because of some petty 90 day limit even though you are making MORE MONEY on me. It was a weeks worth of arguing with team Amli. They kept saying they had to know because other tenants may want to move in, and without having a specific date from me that this was causing issues with their leasing. At that point I made them aware that the apartment across the hall from me and below me were empty and had been for 2 months. Did I also mention that it was now January' How many people are itching to move in the middle of a Chicago January' You would think that any companyy would be happy to make some more $ on someone, apparently it was more important to get me out for someone new to come in.

My final kick with Amli was the day I turned in one of my last rent checks and there was this huge banner in the lease office that said "Congrats Amli at Danada Farms, voted 2008 best Amli property". I pointed to it and said to them "whats with this'". They replied "yeah, we just had this awarded, it was based on a bunch of criteria about the property, isn't that great'". I said "well, they obviously didn't go INSIDE any of the buildings, because if they had, your property would have been dead last in the competition because your facility is a piece of crap". Then walked away.

Amli at Danada Farms cares about outside appearance and scamming people with a low rent rates for the 1st year to get people to sign. They do not care about the well-being of their tenants nor care about making any improvements that are not visible to those that can drive by or drive through the complex. I would never, ever recommend any Amli property to anyone. Even my two run-down college apartment complexes back in the day had better staff and actually cared about the people living there.

I completely agree. My rent went from $860 to $970 to $1101. How do you justify that? And how greedy can you be to add that extra $1? What is that? I left and have never said a good thing about that skanky place ever since. They are thieves and hide behind a name that is no longer valuable because it has been tarnished by them and their actions.
