very good except for the annoying network and phone systems

I am in a two bedroom apartment here and got in here this year. I quite happy with this place except for the following technology issues:

**NETWORK**

1) The network does NOT give you T1 speeds like it advertises. They have a T1 coming in to the complex, but have it massivly overloaded so often it is even slow at web browsing. It dies (a lot) more than one would like. They just brought in a second T1, and I have seen no imporovement.

2) The network service is NOT the normal service you would expect. They BLOCK a lot of ports so you can not use any file sharing software such as kaza, morpheus, audiogalaxy, etc.

3) They have a NAT connection, so even though you get your own static IP address, it is not visible to the outside world, so you can not put up a web or ftp server on your computer.

4) The tech support for the network is pretty sparse. Phone calls routinely go unanswered.

5) Since they own the cable and television lines, you can not get a cable modem or DSL installed, so you are stuck with their service, or dialup.

**TELEPHONE**

1) They have you on a business network in the complex. So this means that you have zero control over it. You don?t even get to choose your long distance, and have to use a marginal sprint plan.

2) You are required to pay for services you may not use such as caller ID.

3) You could do everything cheaper on your own, which makes one feel as if they are being taken advantage of. (and you wouldn?t have to press 9 to get out!)

If you can deal with all those technology problems, it is a great place to live. The grounds are wonderful, and the apartments are decent sized and nicly colored.

I am the network administrator for Millennium Property Management. We now have a 20Mb/s DS-3 and our network speeds are about the same as most IU buildings. At my condo (hosted on the same network) I regularly download at over 8 megaBYTES a second. Network speed is fast.
