I moved to Bloomington 3 years ago from Florida and Barclay Square was recommended to me by an advisor, so I actually signed a lease without ever having seen what the apartments looked like in person. 3 years later I couldn't be happier with my choice.
Well let me start by saying the only bad thing I have to say is that there is a bug issue. My apartment had problems with house centipede and carpenter ants. The pest control man would spray but it wouldn't stop anything, I'd still see them. Went and bought some Ortho Home Defense from Wal-Mart and that took care of it for the most part but still would find random bugs, ESPECIALLY in the spring/summer. This could be embarrassing and creepy if you bugs freak you out.
Now the Good:
1) The rent is cheap, I started out paying 570 with a grad student discount and a few months ago it went up to 590. This price includes washer and dryer in my apartment and water and sewage. The only utility I paid was electric. This is for a 2BR, 850sqft apartment! That's unheard of.
2) The floorplan is great. The apartment is really spacious, the wood trim and cabinetry throughout the apartment is nice. And the indented ceiling in the living room adds a touch of sophistication.
3) Great Maintenance! I never had anything serious happen during my time there but when I did have a concern they fixed it usually the same day, and NEVER more than 48hrs later.
4) You can pay rent and make maintenance requests and other things online. So Convenient!
5) Very Quiet. I lived in Building C toward the front of the property and it was always very quiet which was important for me when I needed to study. Also, the apartments are pretty well insulated because I'd never hear my next door neighbors and rarely I'd hear my upstairs neighbors. My friends would always comment about how quiet my complex was. My building didn't have a lot of kids either, but there were dogs, small dogs so you'd hear barking on occasion.
6) Safe. I never saw random people in the complex. To be honest, I hardly even saw my neighbors. I'd come and go all times of morning and night and never felt unsafe for a minute.
7) Management is great! There's one lady in the office that can be a little abrasive at times but everyone else is nice and attended to anything I needed right away in a courteous manner. I've rented the club house before with no problem. And once I had a package come that had been taken to the office which contained plane tickets I needed to get on a flight early the next morning and the office was closed, it was like 11 at night when I realized that they were probably in the office. I called the emergency number, one of the managers drove from home all the way out to the office, found my package and brought it to me...and it was snowing!
8) Clean. Well kept grounds, you'd be hard pressed to find trash on the ground, nice landscaping. A lot of greenery and trees which makes it feel secluded and more like home. They clear snow very fast, I never had a problem trying to get my car out in the mornings in the winter...it was usually clear by the time I got up.
9) Plenty of parking. And you can park anywhere. They issued decal stickers but I never put mine in my windshield and my car was never towed or anything.
10) The apartment sits on 2 bus lines, which I had to use a couple times when my car was in the shop. It was very convenient.
All I can say is everyone that visited my apartment was amazed that I only paid 570/mnth for this 2BR apartment. The apartments feel like really quality apartments, and that's what I love. If it wasn't for the bug issue, I would give the apartments a 10! but because of that, they only get a 9..lol
Also, I should add I was a little upset that they wouldn't allow me out of my lease early when I got ready to move back to Florida. I had been there 2 years 9mnths. I was told had I been there 3 years they would have let me out :( Couldn't find someone to sublease so I am currently paying for an apartment I am not living in up until August 10th 2009...sucks!
