Not bad, but don't try to sublet...

I'm not going to lie, this apartment wasn't too bad for the price. Although $495 in Bloomington is pretty decent for a 1-BR apartment, if this apartment were in a nicer area, it would probably be considered a dump. Lots of bug problems (spiders, centipedes, fruit flies out of the drain pipes). The pet policy is TERRIBLE. If anyone in your building has a dog, you can hear it barking CONSTANTLY. Great if you're a pet lover, but if you like some peace and quiet, you're out of luck! The appliances are very old and out-dated (especially the fridge and microwave), and they charge for almost everything. Security deposit is only $200, but they automatically take $55 out for carpet cleaning at the end of the year (even if you get it cleaned yourself) and they take $75 out for painting if necessary if you haven't lived there for 24 months...so don't assume you'll be getting in money back!

My biggest complaint is that they will not allow subleasing. I had to move out to go to Indy and they told me that I had to be out 14 days before the next tenant moved in and then they CHARGED ME for those 14 days. When I asked about this, they informed me that most places in Bloomington do NOT allow subletting, which is completely false. I have personally sublet twice elsewhere in Bloomington and have NEVER had this problem. Not to mention, the office staff were very rude and did not even attempt to adequately explain the reason for this charge.

In the end, I'd live here ONLY if you have a pet or like dogs barking at all hours, and if you're going to be staying put for a few years. There are DEFINITELY nicer apartments in better locations on the west side of Bloomington for a similar price if not cheaper...and you avoid the rude/worthless staff at Basswood. lGjq8RUBjvsZjkb5ueji

Maybe this place has changed since I was there...or maybe they were nice to me because I was friends' with the manager and the other lady in the office. No I didn't know them when I moved in, but I would go into the office and talk to them. The staff would go out of their way for me and like I said before they shoveled snow around my car so I could get out! We got the whole security deposit back in about a week. We didn't have a bug problem, but we were on the third floor, yes one part has three floors in the back of the building but two in the front. This place must suck now, I am glad we moved out just in time. I want to visit it sometime, we lived in a small two bedroom apartment and I think it will look tiny now since I???m used to my 5000 square feet home in Indy! hehe I just don't see how we fit everything in that apartment!!! One thing I always did when I was younger and living in apartments??? is I always was in good terms (friends) with the managers...it makes a difference! I think most people need to do that...in the end YOU will benefit.
