Here is what happened to my brother. The manager Cheri said get a lawyer....
On 12/1/07 my brother died alone in his apartment. He was not discovered until 12/6/07... The coroner told manager to call a BIO clean up company by the name of Aftermath to assist them and the family with clean up. They started cleaning at 3pm on 12/6 my family was not notified of his death until 4pm by the greenwood police. We were told by the police and the coroner that the apt. would have a strong odor, but someone will need to deal with it. They informed us that the Aftermath team would remove anything that had been in direct contact with the body. We would have to deal with the cleanup team on the rest of the belongings. We did not know that this cleanup was already taking place until we called the manager of the apt on Friday. We left a message and they called back saying that the office was closed 12/06 but we could come in on 12/07 at 10am to get a key...they had them changed. When my sister went in to get the key the lady told her the cleanup crew had the only key, just go over to my brothers apt. and talk to the cleanup crew (Aftermath). This is the devastating part. While I was trying to make arrangements for his funeral my sister called me in tears. She said the crew had been at this for a total of 12 hours without our consent or knowledge erasing our baby brother s existence from this world. They had chucked 80% of everything in the apt. into a regular roll off dumpster open to the rain for three days at that time. To make things worse, the greenwood police arrived to investigate a crime of theft reported to them earlier that morning. The supervisor of the cleanup team noticed that 3 lock box safes were no longer in the apt. They were there the day before. The Aftermath team blames the maintenance personnel and they blame the clean up team. The police are investigating this for us. Luckily we were able to stop the clean up guys from throwing some papers and some loose change in the dumpster. We were able to make at least one good thing take place out of something so contemptible and appalling. The cleanup crew and the thief left some boxes of change. My brother was a loaner and a scavenger of antiques or just junk. Played the lottery and saved change. He didn't have renters insurance or a will. He was only 43, not married and no children. He just had me, my mom, and a sister. His total life savings was in those lock boxes and loose coins. So we took the change to Kroger and they volunteered to have it counted at no charge. They offered to send it in to the Children's Make a Wish Foundation and have them issue a certificate in his name. THAT DONATION WAS $2,100.00!!!!! The thing is, we would have given what ever was in the lock boxes too. We could have cared less what amount of money or jewelry was in the boxes. We just wanted some small thing or two that had been touched or admired by our brother. A photo or keepsake would have meant more to us than money. We will never be given that chance to remember him. Our complaint is; we were not afforded the opportunity to look through the things that he left in this world. Nor did we give permission to discard all his belongings like garbage. By the way on a most important note...We checked with other more reputable BIO clean up companies in Indianapolis and they were appalled to find out that nothing was cut up and bagged or that everything was tossed in an open dumpster for the public to go through. Maybe catch a disease. There was no cover on the dumpster and rain was washing all this potential BIO waste out in the parking lot for everyone to spread. Never mind the fact that this dumpster was not marked BIO and was dumped at a regular landfill, and not incinerated as set forth by public health code!
I have contacted the manager of the apartments, Cheri. She only talks in circles. I asked for their insurance policy number or phone contact. Also, asked for a copy of their bond. She would only give me the phone number of the Aftermath answering service.
Aftermath will not return my calls. I left a voice message asking for an invoice or something showing who gave them authorization to throw everything in the dumpster. Also, asked them for their bond. I have started the process of filing a complaint with the Johnson county board of health. I have taken photos of what the apartment looked like when we were finally allowed in. I took photos of all the stuff in the dumpster. Spoke to the Greenwood police.
Most importantly we want this tragedy to be exposed to the public so this never happens again. We want a public apology to the family. We want his apartment cleaned properly by Bio-Trauma 911, Inc. We want the apartments to pay for both clean ups. We want the Aftermath Company to turn themselves in to the proper authority to be fined for the improper way they disposed of the BIO hazard.

I would never live here even if it were free. This situation should never have happened and and even if it is not completely the managements fault, their reputation is still on the line. A family should never been treated this way!

People die alone in homes all the time. Who do you blame? Do we call the mortgage company and see WHY they were not keeping track of our beloved? Oh wait, I GUESS if they were SO beloved they would have checked on their beloved family member huh? My, we are now blaming DEATH on apartment workers? This is laughable. and not news worthy...just sad
