The problem with Zender is just how they treat people. You figure with most family businesses that if you have a problem, they re willing to work with you. Not Zender. The company philosophy is to just get the person off the phone and ignore it.
The most glaring incident of this was during a storm my ceiling leaked (in a two bedroom apartment). This happened often, because their idea of fixing a leaky ceiling was just to paint over the spot. One spot that was leaking was sagging badly, so I called emergency maintenance and told them it looked like it was going to fall in. He said they d look at it on Monday. It was Friday night. So much for emergency maintenance. The ceiling did end up falling in at two spots that night. The bigger of the two holes (about three or four square feet) took 3 weeks to be fixed, the other one took over a month. During the whole time I had to call Zender repeatedly to get updates because absolutely nothing was being done about it. Worst of all, there was a clause in the lease that said in the case of an accident where a portion of the apartment was unlivable the rent for that portion would be abated, or waived. I called half a dozen times to apply this portion of the lease, to which they flatly refused to without offering so much as a reason. I demanded to talk to the supervisor, whom they wouldn t put me through to. When I finally hassled them enough to get through to a supervisor, I asked for a face-to-face meeting to show my evidence and so they couldn t just try pushing me off the phone. Wouldn t meet with me. It s just amazing that you re unable to talk to a supervisor at a company when there s a problem. So they blatantly broke their end of the lease and said that if I don t like it I can just sue them.
Another major problem is the towing. They have some sort of racket going on with the tow company and during the two years I lived there, a number of residents were towed. I heard stories where a resident borrowed a car for a night and forgot to switch the tag over, where the tag was behind a different parking pass, where there was no rear-view mirror and the tag was instead sealed on the window. No warning or anything like that, just a $135 tow. I could understand it somewhat if the parking lot was one that was usually full, but there are always at least 10 open spots. There s no reason for them to tow except for the extra money. I ve heard a ton of other stories that go along the same lines, from crumbling buildings, to ignoring adding any extra lights if there s a spot with a lot of break ins, to stealing damage deposit money, and so on.
Don t rent here. They ll screw you over the first chance they get it s just the company philosophy. Go with Van Rooy, a company that has treated me much better in my experience.
