Going dowhill

I really liked Avalon Lake when I first moved in; my apartment was great. However, the quality of the tenants was on a steady decline the entire time I lived there. By the time I moved out, I tried not to really go anywhere by myself after dark because of the questionable people constantly hanging around.

Of course it depends on where you are in the complex when it comes to direct neighbors; mine happened to be pretty terrible. I couldn't sleep in the master bedroom due to noise from the person next to me; putting in a complaint about it didn't really do much of anything.

The apartment itself was nice, very open, spacious, plenty of natural light, all around nice place. Had I re-signed, the rent was going to go up significantly, while I heard a conflicting story from another resident about her rent rate only going up by a little bit. I guess the rent depends on when you move in or somebody's mood at the time'

Aside from that, they were honest about the deposit and didn't gouge, trying to blame things on me that I didn't do. That's happened in previous apartments, so it was nice not to have to deal with that. They also sent the remainder of the deposit very quickly after I moved out. The girls in the office are typically friendly and will help you out with whatever's going on. They can only do so much when so many of the tenants are of the current caliber.

Parking was pretty terrible, especially if you're near the townhouses with more than two people in them. They say that each apartment has two parking spaces in the overall count but the design isn't adequate and we frequently had to park pretty far from the apartment.

When it's warm outside, beware of the children. They play in the parking lot and will be hanging out in the middle while you're trying to enter or exit the complex. Many of them are unsupervised and run around outside, screaming, until ten or eleven o'clock at night.

Overall, I no longer think that the apartments are worth the rent being charged. The area seems to have gone pretty downhill. Too many break-ins for me. My car was vandalized on one occasion and broken into on another, along with several others on the same night. The suspected drug deals, being robbed, and hearing gunshots more than once sealed my decision to move out, despite really liking the apartment itself and the apartment complex's close proximity to my place of work. The new commute is worth it to feel and be safer.
