Wood, yes, but no brook

Moving into Brookwood Apartments was an experience all its own. First off, they never did a walk-through before signing the lease! Second, when I entered the apartment it was still dirty- they had to resend the cleaning crew to remove the trash, razors, and powder laying around.

The kitchen cabinet shelves were half-stuck with that paper covering stuff and even the ones that weren't were mysteriously sticky. I actually removed every single shelf and scrubbed them until my hands were full of splinters. During this I discovered many of the little plastic knobs that the drawers rested on were missing and it was pulling teeth to get these replaced by the office. On top of the cabinets was a half-inch thick of dust and grease- I used a lot of Dawn dishsoap and Clorox bleach to scrub that as well.

They also decided to reglaze one of the bathroom tubs the day before we were to move in- due to the fumes and smell I had to postpone moving to the next weekend! Unfortunately, this was discovered after signing our lease. =( To apologize for the one week we paid rent and couldn't move in, the office gave us one BAG of popcorn and a $5 Blockbuster card... Not a box of popcorn, not enough to entertain us for a weekend, not even a *hmm,* prorated refund for the week we couldn't live there, but those two items that never got used because neither of us liked popcorn or had an account at Blockbuster.

After loading up all the stuff someone pointed out the crack in my bathroom toliet and how it was leaking when I noticed that the kitchen sink faucet had a huge crack in it. That was when someone (a family member) said something about we hope that got added to the walk-through and I realized that was never done. It took me TWO WEEKS of returning to the office every other day about it, only to result in them handing me the paper and telling me to do it myself. Not only was I naive but most of the floor was covered in boxes and furniture- hiding many of the living room stains.

As I and others have already mentioned, yes, maintenance was poor. As far as the office staff, they varied. There was one guy that remained the entire time named Robert who was the one decent staff I encountered. There were a couple who were so bad I had to call and report how unprofessional their attitudes were. The worst in my opinion was one who got promoted to manager, I think her name was Amber.

At one point my brother found mold under a loose tile in the kitchen- this was not responded to in the two weeks promised by the lease agreement. I never could open my bedroom window because it had been tampered with previously. The draft was pretty bad and had to be insulated around the windows. The front door was also a nightmare- the foam lining fell off and when maintenance "replaced" it they did such a poor job it continued peeling. When they were cleaning the building or whatever, they stole our mats with no explaination until my neighbor and I reported ours missing. Speaking of which, in my one year there I had 3 different neighbors across the hall- no kidding.

Now, as for the actual apartment. The first thing you're likely to notice is a huge hutch inbetween the kitchen and living room. I loved this thing- did not function as a decent computer desk at all, but the bookshelves and all the storage space this unit provided was great! That is one thing about Brookwood- there is a LOT of storage space! Once its clean, there are a lot of cabinets. I preferred the wood to the speckled textured white paint or whatever they coated the cabinets with- they are probably all like that now which is a shame since it also made the cabinets stick more.

Whoever designed those apartments I joked must have smoked crack, because all of the outlets are placed in the middle of the wall *right above* the long heater vents! I used electrical tape to line the cord along the wall to prevent it from laying on the hot metal heating case because that just seemed like a fire hazard to me.

I loved the master bedroom- hanging a sheer shower curtain over the bathroom inside set the place off! The bathroom itself had a closet- perfect for towels and toiletry items- not to mention the bedroom's walk-in closet. This room could have been in a house for the size of it! The second bedroom was an average apartment type of room though. Although I appreciated all the storage space Brookwood offered in general, the one thing I miss most is that master bedroom. For an engaged lady who lived on her own while letting a sibling stay with her, this was a very nice arrangement!

Robert again was very helpful in trying to get me to renew... somehow he pulled some strings and was able to offer not raising my rent. While I appreciated his help, my wedding date was moved up a year and took priority.

Moving out became yet another experience. Although I scheduled a walk-through in advance, the person postponed and then when they did show up- was late! I was not given a checklist of what to have cleaned which I thought would be fine since I clean anyways. Due to the walk-through not being done correctly, I did not see those living room stains (see above) and that manager Amber snapped that I would be charged for replacing the entire living room! I had to point out the circumstances about the walk-through being done late and without staff expertise... she argued some and then said the oven wasn't scrubbed clean although it had been wiped out.

It was kind of funny because a neighbor's cat snuck in (one of the maintenance guys, I believe he was) while I took the cleaning supplies to my car. I eventually heard it meow in the hallway while I was waiting on her. I thought it was maybe lucky she was late since I could shoo it out before she saw it and assumed it was mine, in actuality I wish she had saw it so maybe she might have recognized it... when we walked into the bedroom the blinds were broken in the middle as if that cat launched itself onto them somehow. I was so baffled and shocked that to answer how it happened I could only think of to respond that I opened them up too fast and the plastic piece caught on it. I figured that would be more believeable than saying it just happened by some strange animal that happened to wander in that morning!

Although they took out that and some other charge (I stayed and scrubbed that oven) out of my deposit, they never sent me an itemized charge list even when I called and requested to see exactly what they charged me and for what. I assume the blinds but the fee looked like it was more than that and I never found out what else they added in there.
