studios aren't so great From: indierenter82 Date posted: 12/7/2007 Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2007 1 response   I lived in a studio in the Balmoral for two years. I only stayed because I was a broke college kid and couldn't afford to move. During my second year, my place was invaded with rats. I don't know what attracted them since I don't cook and never kept any food in my place other than frozen dinners. The management would send someone to put traps in my utility closet, but other than that I was just told that "you can never really get rid of rats in an old building like this." One day I came home and found a rat in my bathtub. I had to kill it myself. And rats aren't like mice. They're loud, and they kept me and my boyfriend up with their incessant squeaking. There's also some homeless people who work the area. They like to knock on your door in the wee hours of the morning and try to hit you up for money. I started to feel really unsafe because of this. The final straw was when there were three armed robberies on that block all within days of each other. A friend of mine who lived next door (the Admiral) was pistol-whipped. That neighborhood is really declining, and the studios do not have secured entrances. Any yahoo can walk right up to the door. Parking is a nightmare. The lot is too small, and they've been known to tow cars that have permits. That's not a neighborhood where you want to have to park on the street. A friend of mine staying overnight had his car broken into while parked on the street. It's a shame, because the building is beautiful and the floorplans are interesting and unique. Being an older building, the walls are much more solid than new construction and I never heard a peep from my neighbors. And the studios have enormous kitchens. But with the crime problems and the infestations, it's just not worth it.
